This thread is all about controlling #soilerosion in an Eco-way. Combined with water retention structures - it will also aid #Waterconservation. Erosion Control and water harvesting/storage are closely coupled wrt Watershed Management as well. Read! 👇
Most of us know there are different stages of soil erosion
1. Splash
2. Sheet erosion
3. Rill
4. Gully
Gullies create wastelands. So it's very important to control Soil erosion at the initial stage. There are several ways - Vegetative means and through engineering structures.
Usage of Coir GeoTextile to control Soil erosion - Uttrakhand Forest Department carried out this Eco-way treatment of gullies at 10,000 ft in the alpine meadows. They used coir knit sheets to spread over the banks/bunds of the gully.

This technique is not just used for gullies to control the soil erosion. In most mountains regions, experiments were also done to use close knit coir sheets to prevent mudslides.

A desert locust are a migratory type of grasshoppers. They can live about three months. The lifecycle has three stages - egg, hopper/ nymph, adult. Eggs laid by adults hatch in two weeks. The hoppers shed their skins, each time when they grow in size. VC Latitude Adventures
Hoppers take about 30-40 days to grow into an adult. Adults mature in about three weeks to nine weeks based on environmental conditions, mainly temperature. That's the crucial point to be noted and the major concern here - temperature. VC Saba Douglas - growing hoppers

Here is something that you need to know about a particular water harvesting structure. Until I joined Forest Department, I did not hear about Percolation Ponds. Many wouldn't be familiar this term too.
Read this Thread - from my experience I have listed out some important points!
Few pics from the percolation ponds(pp) tht were created at Vandalur forests within the zoo premises. These pp's are regularly maintained by desiltation and bank strengthening. The results of the last year maintenance has given good results. Water is available in few pp even now.
Percolation ponds can created with minimal resources. All you need to check is,
1. Soil should have the capacity to percolate water.
2. Identify the lowest contour levels so that the water collected from the catchment naturally drains to this pond..
