1/6 Today is Youth Day in South Africa, a day to reflect and remember the black South Africans who today 44 years ago set out to peacefully protest against the Apartheid regime and more specifically the Bantu education system.
2/6 A system that ensured young black South Africans were not educated, but instead taught how to be servants and fit into the Apartheid regime. Upon their peaceful march the protestors were met by Armed police who opened fire on them with live ammunition.
3/6 Hundred's of brave black students peacefully asking to be educated, asking to be allowed to learn were killed. 1 photo symbolised the horror of that day. A murdered 12 year old boy being carried with his sister alongside him. This was Hector Pieterson.
4/6 The photo of a lifeless 12 year old boy killed by the police for peacefully asking to be educated echoed loudly around the worlds media, highlighting the true horror of what was happening in South Africa. This piled pressure onto an already under pressure government.
Eventually leading to the dismantlement of Apartheid.

It is encouraging to take a moment and appreciate how far we have come. But absolutely horrifying to be able to see so many similarities between our modern day lives and Apartheid South Africa.
But there is inspiration to be drawn from these tragic events. Protest CAN bring change! #youthday2020 #BlackLivesMatter
