A DRY MORSEL - "OKELE GBIGBE!"
"Better is a dry morsel with quietness," says the first part of Proverbs 17:1. Its an age long wisdom shared by the elders.
My close shave experience learning this was immediately after I left secondary school and I missed going to jail by an inch.
I was introduced to factory work, while waiting for jamb result. It was a plastic company in Lagos and many of us are young school leavers. Today's get-rich-quick mindset was equally pervasive amongst us and I got involved with a plan to steal a plastic mould compressor.
My share after selling the compressor at Alaba International was meant to pay a neighbourhood senior bros for Visa to Germany. This was our dream route, out of poverty in Amuwo Odofin then, as cars and electronics sent by those who already made it to Germany keep pouring in.
I was directly responsible for the compressor four of us planned to "move." We dont call it stealing then. My part is to teach the team how to bypass the machine from the assembly line, and shut it down; which I did. Then we are supposed to ship it out under night cover to Alaba.
After I left the university, and was already working in South Africa, I ran into a brother of the boy that lead the theft, who told me his brother is still in jail, awaiting trial. This is eight yrs after! Their mum was killed at Maza-Maza trying to raise money to get him out.
I didn't go to work the night the deed was done because I had a fight with my brother that I was living with, and I moved out to a friend's place the next day instead of returning to our parent's place. My gang went ahead with the plan, and then sent me N150 instead of N1000.
The CID team that came to my brother's place to arrest me after arresting the others walked past me without knowing, as I later found out. Nobody knew where I was except my mother. I bought a Bugle Boy jeans with the cash, disappeared and landed in FUTA for my 100L registration.
I dont know If my other gang members made it out of Kirikiri eventually. There's a very thin line between the modest life you enjoy today, and events that would leave you in eternal regrets. Its often said there's no law in Nigeria. This is true until you're arrested and charged.
"There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." Proverbs 16:25. There's a lot of encouragement on social media asking you to adopt this road to ruination. If you are a Marlian, you will know Nigerian prison is a place to dread when your weed clears.
While you are serenaded by daft counter-argument on Twitter about internet fraud being right because of unemployment, ladies, be aware dating yahoo boys, makes you complicit and Interpol dragnet against "business email compromise" has become ubiquitous and aggressive.
One in Turkey is flaunting you here as his babe, and you are savouring the glamour. It may be next month, or 5yrs. When e red, and his transfers are traced to your account, you will "tay" in jail pass monkey. We will keep your Dubai flex pictures for "before and after" trolling.
The duplicity comes in different forms and you need to beware of being drawn into a bottomless pit by many "born throw-way" on this app, if you are raised in a proper home by struggling parents.
The part I don't get is the abhorrence for android and obsession for iPhone.
Influencer! Influencer! Ole ni gbogbo yin. Make una go find work. Nobody has died using android. Sadly, its this two left legs things that come here to shade those striving legit in contentment. It will not augur the day I will see "anonymous bought this for me" again on my TL.
