The thing about John Bolton’s shock at Trump’s ignorance and incompetence is that it takes a fair amount of brain poisoning in the first place to look at Trump and think he might be anything other than ignorant and incompetent.

There’s a belief, one I’ve expressed myself, that a “more competent” Trump would be worse than this one, because he would be able to actually accomplish his goals. But I’m not so sure, because much of the damage of the Trump administration is precisely because he is incompetent.
He has no interest in governing or personnel, so he allows deputies to do whatever they please, creating chaos at the agency level. He’s erratic and compulsive, forcing the White House to constantly deal with and respond to an unending stream of near-disasters...
...he has no sense of the limits of the office, which leads him into politically ruinous confrontations. He is indifferent to public opinion, so he acts in ways that erode him and his party’s standing.
A more competent politician with Trump’s instincts might be more dangerous in the long-term, but in the short-term, I’m not actually so sure anymore.
