Trump is a false idol for China-hawks:

- Pulled out of TPP
- Tariff'd manufacturing inputs
- Alienated Europe
- Intervened in ZTE investigation
- Begged Xi to buy swing state soy
- OK'd Uyghur camps
- Called HK an internal matter
- Gave China the WHO

These are all on the "actions taken" side of the ledger, and are no doubt dwarfed by the "actions not taken."

Trump was afforded a huge opportunity to shift the GOP on all kinds of important policy issues, but declined.

Whether or not the "realignment" is real, this ain't it.

US manufacturers employ more workers in China than in Mexico, and own more valuable property, plants, and equipment in China than in any foreign country besides Canada.

Why did China become the biggest offshore market for the US?

Cheap labor? or a very particular set of skills?
China's skilled workforce represents what @delong calls "communities of engineering practice."

Communities of practice maintain process knowledge, or know-how, that can't be easily written down.

As @danwwang argues, rebuilding those communities is key.

My grandmother and grandfather lived to 94 and 93, surviving their last decade or so in an "assisted living facility" (home-like apartments with round the clock nursing staff).

The terrible management of those facilities was a daily conversation.
I see a few factors that may explain why nursing home reform isn't a national priority.

1. Nursing homes are as much a service to the extended family who would otherwise have elder care duties as they are to the residents themselves. This introduces a principal-agent problem.
