Tory MP James Cleverly caught trying to pull the wool over the public’s eyes on BBCQT by claiming that the government had backed both their own privatised and centralised app as well as the same app used by other European countries including Germany.
When asked by Fiona Bruce why the government had trialled the NHS app on the Isle of Wight but hadn’t bothered to trial the European app here, Cleverly claimed that there was no need to as it was already used elsewhere in Europe.
Well sorry James but it only went live in Germany yesterday so it didn’t have time to produce enough results of how efficient and accurate it is. Tory’s talking a load of tosh yet again as they only ever stated they were going after developing their own in-house app, not both!
When are representatives of this government going to realise that there are tech savvy people out there who know that no software goes live irrespective if it’s origin before it is trialled and tested first in the environment it will operate. They need to admit they got it wrong!
And here’s the difference between Johnson and Hancock’s approach and Merkel’s government:

Unlike the U.K. NHS app there was a strong participation of civil society as well: after the German app’s source code was disclosed, programmers jumped at it. About 7,000 suggestions for improvements were submitted.👇
U.K. app - No source code available or any consultation whatsoever with heath professionals in the field with years of previous experience of contact tracing never mind civil society. Both public health officials and civil society bypassed.
The one thing the government ought to have learnt from the Salisbury’s poisonings is that public health officials are THE experts in crisis situations and have a central role to play. Cummings, Johnson and Hancock in particular chose deliberately to ignore that lesson!!
Result - Public Health officials completely unsure of what their role is in all this. GP’s bypassed! They don’t even know right now how many of their patients actually tested positive for the virus never mind being asked if they had an opinion on how the NHS app should operate!
The is all down to a government and it’s chief advisor choosing to operate in secret to give the green light to a private company contracted through Cummings to develop an app without any experience in the field of public health & without any scrutiny or civil society input!
No wonder citizens see the government app as designed for one purpose only.. monitoring us whilst stealing our data indefinitely and avoiding any accountability in doing so!

The German government at the launch of its Corona app were up front with a clear message to their public on privacy protection:

The German app’s still waiting on legal clearance but off to a much better start than the clearly unexceptional & incompetent U.K. government project that had zero public health input and is a testimony to the secretive unaccountable nature of their bungling British counterparts.
