Today we celebrate #Juneteenth. It marks the day that Galveston, Texas announced the abolition of slavery in 1865 despite the legal end to slavery two years prior.
Juneteenth is NOT the day slavery ended; it is the day those trapped in bondage in Texas finally received the delayed news of their freedom.
Let us not forget, the 13th Amendment restricted slavery to those who have not committed a crime, thus transforming slavery into the Convict Leasing system and prison labor. Today, the prison industrial complex is still holding onto the last vestiges of slavery.
Through #Juneteenth, we honor the slaves upon whose backs this country was built, but we also recognize that the legacy of slavery is still embedded in many of our institutions.

And so, we must do the work to push this nation forward.
