He says he found out he was "stepping down" by reading it in a press release.

NEW: The federal judge appointed to act as a "friend of the court" in the Michael Flynn case says the Justice Department's decision to drop the case into Flynn should be denied.

He cites "highly irregular conduct" by prosecutors "to benefit a political ally of the President.”
MORE: Judge John Gleeson says the newly stated view by the Justice Department that Flynn didn't violate law against false statements is contradicted by the position it has taken in similar cases and earlier filings in the Flynn case itself.

NBC News: NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea tonight is pleading for a toning down of rhetoric against cops by politicians and others, following days of violence against police. But, he also apologized for "unprofessional" conduct by some of his cops, says suspensions coming.
MORE: Shea did not rule charges for officers as a result of their investigations, either.

The extraordinary press conference began with a montage of attacks against police including last night's stabbing, a cop knocked unconscious with a brick, a cop hit by a car, and others.
The press conference, that was held inside a heavily fortified police headquarters with a level of security not seen in recent memory, was notable because it did not include the mayor or any other elected official.

NEW: The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Las Vegas PD announce charges against 3 alleged members of the right-wing extremist group "Boogaloo" with violating state & federal laws, "for conspiracy to cause destruction during protests in Las Vegas", prosecutors say.
The case is extraordinary in that someone came forward to the FBI with a belief that two of the people charged were going to conduct a terror attack and the FBI signed the person up as a Confidential Human Source.
Charging documents say Stephen T. Parshall, aka “Kiwi,” 35, Andrew Lynam, 23, and William L. Loomis, 40, all from Las Vegas were arrested on Saturday on a state criminal complaint for conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism and other charges. A picture of the alleged devices:
