The @Airbnb story started in 2007 when @jgebbia & @bchesky rented out their house during a design conference and realized that the idea could potentially be a game-changer. It has seen tremendous growth since then.
5 key ingredients that make Airbnb special & iconic, A thread🧵
1. Understand the value your product creates for the end-user before thinking about scaling.
- In early days @Microsoft, @Facebook (& others) obsessed over how users found value in their products, and how to be better than the competitors.🧐🧐
2. Trust in your product is the greatest retention hack. WYSIWYG. Always. 🤝
- Airbnb set-up stringent host protocols and golden standards for verification of hosts and guests to ensure the safety of the community.
3. While hiring people: Aligning on core values > capability
- At Airbnb, core values were embedded in every aspect of decision making. Be it product priorities, hiring, yearly roadmaps, even the benefits like happy hours.
4. When in doubt🤔🤔, rely on data 👍🏾👍🏾
- A hypothesis can be gut ridden but conclusions should be based on experiment
- It is important to have a single source of truth accessible to everyone.
- At Airbnb, experimentation was celebrated and acknowledged.
5. Build ideal experiences, work backwards from it.
- Do things manually, else you'll miss important insights.
- It is okay to not focus on scaling at the beginning.

- Spreading awareness that diversity doesn't exist currently.
- If we're building products for everyone, we need to make sure the product team represents everyone.
