One of the arguments in my book is that Trump appealed to frustration (an energizing emotion) in 2016. When he says things like "they should have done it a long time ago"--he's appealing to frustration, but now claiming that he has resolved the block that frustrated his people.
Us/them polarization & distrust are Trump's other two general strategies (+ activating frustration). His attacks on the media are designed to take their agenda setting and reality defining power away from them. It's very effective with his base.
Trump loves to market/brand "radical left Democrat" & "radical fake news" here.
Long tu quoque (appeal to hypocrisy) intertwined with his stories about Dem cities/BLM protests. Tu quoque is the dominant figure of our broken public sphere. It's corrosive because causes distrust & polarization. Trump loves it, of course.
