Fast-past, ultrastylish, ultraviolent neo-dystopian cosplay samurai slashers – the latest video game genre! But seriously, Katana Zero rocks! I didn’t expect to like it that much.
I’m not a big fan of cryptic storytelling and Katana Zero is BIG on that. But the presentation is so well done that even I cared about the story towards the end.
One reason for that is that Katana Zero has AMAZING pixel art & animation. Honestly, it’s so expressive during cutscenes.
Another reason is the HILARIOUSLY CREATIVE way dialogues are presented. I think I’ve posted before how much I loved the things games like Undertale and Golf Story did with their dialogues by adding font effects and such, but Katana Zero is on a whole new level.
Maybe some effects are used *too* much, but there are always new surprises! I took so many videos just to capture them. Especially the conversations with the little girl were always gold.
Now Katana Zero also has choices in dialogues – always. That makes them way more engaging, because the responses differ quite a lot and the game is great at making you feel involved.
And of course the game is just a lot of fun. Maybe my favorite form of "challenge" in video games is short segments that you may repeat a lot, but you improve a little every time. And that’s basically the core of Katana Zero’s gameplay.
And there’s never just one solution, that’s another fun part. Barging right in doesn’t work? Try taking a different way. It’s so simple, but really well done.
Plus the motorcycle part is much more fun than in FF7. :P
Overall I had a great time with Katana Zero and will definitely play any DLC or sequel, especially since the story ended on an open note. Great game!
