3- I have reiterated it here that you should endeavor to make sure that your career journey start from campus. It is possible to go through school and not start your career;

4- especially if you already know that you're not staying in the line of your course of study. You will need to do more!

5- Also, I have always dissociated myself from the "school na scam" generation. School will only be a scam if you do not know where you're headed and how to make the best of your time on campus!

6- While I was preparing for this session, I opened a folder on my laptop and I saw certificates of many online courses (mostly from @YALINetwork) and I smiled because it would form part of my discussion tonight.

7- Personal development became the talk of the town among coaches in different fields in the last decade. It is an act and art of developing skills outside all forms of formal education.

8- Those who have embraced it have seen tremendous growth in the area they chose to develop personally. I am a big testimony of what personal development can do to a person. However, PD has it's limits.

9- Every career has a set of skills needed for you to succeed. These skills are soft and hard. We had a robust discussion on soft skills some times ago and it was a great time.

10- BTW, my book on soft skills is almost out. It's a compilation of the thoughts I shared here. Watch out 😉

The hard skills you need for a career are mostly basic abilities needed to do the job,

11- however, they are validated by CERTIFICATES! This is the limitation of personal development. You must have the certificates that validates hard skills in your field and the certificates must be from the recognized institutions

12- So personal development must include professional development. You must take on the professional steps needed for you to have any form of authority in your career field.

13- So this brings me to where I talk about how to engage in professional development

#CareerTipsForStudents
#EKSUNews
14- First, you're in school. Please, take your academics seriously. Finishing with a good grade STILL has many advantages. I will not get tired of saying this

#CareerTipsForStudents
#EKSUNews
15- Research the professional courses and the awarding institutions. Google will help you with that.

#CareerTipsForStudents
#EKSUNews
16- Thirdly, get a professional mentor. You need someone ahead of you to show you what to take seriously and what to avoid. Personal development will not do this for you.

#CareerTipsForStudents
#EKSUNews
17- You can get professional mentors here on Twitter. Use the app responsibly. As much as many have become jokers here, be focused. There are still many focused people here. So, Tweet Responsibly.

18- Lastly, on your LinkedIn profile, switch on 'career advice' and you will start getting notification of people that can be a mentor to you. You select the ones you want and send a befitting DM. Good luck.

19- This is where I will stop for tonight. If you have questions, I will be glad to attend to them. Thank you @Eksunews
