Change Jobs The Smart Way (Excepts From My Book 30 Career Lessons I Learnt Along The Way)

When I started my banking career at age 25, I set a goal to be a general manager at 40. So I developed a 15-year plan.
I figured that staying with a single company and expecting to be promoted on an average of every 3 years (if I'm lucky and become a high-flier) wouldn't cut it because the best I would have been promoted is a maximum of 5 times.
I knew that, depending on the organization, it would take about 12 steps to get to my goal in the planned time frame. My plan was therefore to concentrate on horizontal movements, while taking advantage of vertical movements as the opportunities presented themselves.
Changing jobs can be tricky. There are some fundamental questions that you need to answer: Why are you changing jobs? What's your prime motivation? How will the new job help you in meeting your personal goals?
Even though money does matter, I counsel people not to change jobs only for bigger pay. That should not be your single consideration. I've realized that the euphoria of increased salary lasts for only a few months as expenses always rise to meet income.
This is why you should consider other benefits and allowances that come with the job.

Find out about their health insurance package. I once worked for an organization which had a good family health plan.
Therefore, when my wife
delivered our daughter via cs, the bill was covered. That is one of the reasons more females have worked almost their entire lives in that company than males. Taking your leave was sacrosanct and people were actively encouraged to go on vacation.
Consider the work environment. You may need to speak to someone you know in the prospective company. Will you be able to thrive under such work environment? Do they have the products and services that will assist you in delivering on the commitments you gave during the interview?
If they don't, then you may not be able to migrate your existing relationships successfully (especially as a sales person).

What's the brand like? Is there brand acceptance and a positive perception? What kind of structure do they operate?
Don't jump into a company where you need to start explaining the wisdom in your move to others. If you have to, ensure that it comes at a premium. This will compensate for any inconvenience you will face.
What is the organizational culture like? Does it allow for innovation and creativity? Will it allow you to thrive? Is it an environment that kills innovations and rewards mediocrity? How often do they evolve? Who are the Management team? Any international affiliates?
We are on the global stage and preparation for global competitiveness is extremely imperative now for relevance in dealing with today's opportunities.....
