I think it’s really important to consider the systemic harm the capitalist technologies for creating animal cells independent of those actual wild animal (and also farming to a lesser extent) like in this article, esp for Indig ppl

chemically, cellularly, taste-wise eating salmon from wild salmon bodies versus farmed salmon bodies versus salmon cells grown in a lab isn’t much different

but it’s completely and utterly different in who controls the means of production and the consequences of that control (2)

to put things in more Marxist language, Yupiit understand that animals control own their own means of production over the animal products produced from their bodies

if they want you to have food from their body, they must willingly give it you (3)

but capitalist appropriation of the means of producing salmon cells from salmon is a violation of the salmon autonomy, a violation of the agreement between Yupiit and salmon that we’ll both maintain healthy lands so they’ll be healthy enough to share the gifts of their bodies (4)

this technology means that capitalists have no incentive to preserve a healthy ecosystem for salmon, to maintain a good and harmonious relationship with the salmon nations because they can create salmon products outside of those systems (5)

in fact it means they have an incentive to actively destroy those animal nations and ecosystems, whether through climate change, damming rivers, or pollution, because it means that they’ll create a monopoly over the means of production of animal products (6)

for a capitalist w/ the tech to create biodiversity through bioengineering it’s just good business to destroy natural sources of biodiversity

if you have the tech to create animals cells then it’s just good business to destroy wild sources of those cells (the wild animals) (7)

and the standard process of capitalism simply does this kind of ecosystemic destruction in the course of business: capitalism doesn’t have to actively do something to achieve destruction, capitalism just has to stand by and do nothing (8)

so regardless of whether or not you share the Yupiit understanding of animals, the bioengineering tech to produce animal/plant products independent of those animal/plants will have negative environmental effects for everyone (9)

and this goes for any kind of bioengineering in general: other fish, marine animals, land animals, plants

will the people involved actively destroy or refuse to support the animals that made their profits possible?

capitalists extending control of the means of production farther than they’ve ever gone before, down into our bodies, cells, and DNA and the cells of our animal relations should be really scary and concerning to everyone!!! (11)
