I think a lot of her early mistakes and political actions were also simply overlooked or ignored.

She had one scandal after the next during the COVID-19 response that got overlooked or downplayed.
How many people are aware that her office green-lit giving state contracts related to COVID-19 to Dem groups and then lied about it?

Emails showed them trying to change the official names to reduce the scrutiny before they got caught.

How many people know that, similar to NY, she also ordered MI nursing homes to accept COVID-19 positive patients, creating death traps for the most vulnerable residents? She was actually ignored early warnings not to do it.

In fact, those nursing home hubs even accepted non-elderly patients. That's what happened with viral video of a mentally ill man beating one resident. He was sent there after testing positive for COVID-19.

She continuously extended stay-at-home orders based on her personal preferences for weeks after all the original objectives that she had set out were met:
How many people know Whitmer's husband traveled up north to their cabin while she had banned other MI residents from doing that?

Then there was the scandal w husband name-dropping to get his boat in the lake for Memorial weekend.

Whitmer's rules were so arbitrary that she would promote, and participate in, mass protests on one day, and then extend closures for hair salons the next.

She's currently fighting in court to keep gyms closed.

Ah almost forgot to include her random and pointless rule that prevented people from buying gardening supplies during the lockdown:
Yes, she repeatedly dismissed the sacrifices people were making during the lockdowns. Was especially upsetting given the selective enforcement and arbitrariness of the rules.
Anyways, all of those things were mostly overlooked and ignored while Whitmer got extensive praise in the press. Meanwhile, the deaths in Michigan continued to pile up. The state is doing much better now, but the damage has already been done.

This is the type of tweet someone sends when they don't actually look at any data, have no interest in the facts, and just have a preconceived narrative they want to support.
First, notice how he ignores all the blue states currently spiking. The spikes aren't divided by red and blue. They are specifically correlated to areas where there were no major outbreaks before:

Second, the timing for his narrative makes no sense. Those states didn't see ANY spikes for over a month of re-opening. Then suddenly they ALL started seeing upticks that originated end of May and early June. That can't be tied to reopening phases, which varied by state.

Thread. Rather clear that the hypothesis of "reopenings led to spikes" just doesn't match the data for cases or hospitalizations. A drastic shift can clearly be traced to late May and early June.
It's rather obvious, as @boriquagato suggests, that the spikes are directly correlated with the timing of protests. But data that spread occurred at protests is limited thus far. That's why I view most likely explanation is that many Americans changed their behavior around then.
Why did they change their behavior?

Seems obvious. They saw media, politicians, and many health officials prioritize something else over limiting the virus. That clearly led to many Americans, on both sides, to take it less seriously & be less willing to take precautions.

The way these white "protesters" specifically target and try to degrade African American police officers is so revealing. In this video the protester even manages to use a racial slur while attacking this officer (1:12).

Open racism that gets overlooked.
Just imagine if the situation was reversed and this was a white police officer degrading a black protester. The video would make it on to news outlets. Someone doesn't lose their humanity because they put on a uniform.
A constant trend.

The amount of restraint these AA officers consistently display while being dehumanized and berated is incredible. I get that's what you sign up for, but I wouldn't be able to do it.
