A: Determine what is important to you. Be clear on your desired compensation, work-life integration, and professional development. Negotiate. Don't compromise.

A: Be strategic! Be intentional when leveraging your network. Be clear about what you need - a reference, advice, a referral, etc. Make it easy for people to support you.

A: The first step is to do great work!
- Create a personal circle of people who keep you accountable. Your core network
- Name and reflect your identity in ways that you are proud of. Let people know who you are.

Invest in yourself and career development:
- A professional coach (if you can afford it)
- Books
- Courses, etc.

- LinkedIn is a great place to show your work, communities you belong to, your conferences, and interests.

Q: How to work with an executive recruiter.

A: Respond to emails from recruiters. If you are not interested in the opportunity, refer 3 people (especially people of color). For future reference, let the recruiter know what you're looking for.

Q: As a person of color, what are some things to look for in your next employer?

A: Here are a few things:
- Diversity statement
- Diversity in leadership and team
- DEI history & metrics
- Culture
- Compensation
- Community (e.g. Affinity groups)

A: Ask questions about their approach to diversity and see how they respond. Are they open to a conversation? Are they a learning organization that is growing and making strides to increase diversity and create an inclusive environment?

A: If you are the first (or one of the few) person/people of color in the organization, decide if you are able to be the first and only. Understand what that requires from you and if you're in a position to lead in this regard.

Q: How can working parents request support in these times?

A: Be clear about what you need. Discuss with the recruiter or hiring manager and ask what the company is willing/able to do to support parents (e.g. flexible schedule, a four-day workweek).

A: Know that your experiences are relevant and needed. Be purposeful about telling your story and the value you bring to the role.

To avoid tech bias, demonstrate tech competency throughout the process.
