For my morning quiet time with God, I read Amos. When Israel fell into the worship of false deities, injustice and chaos were the inevitable results. America is a pluralistic land, never intended to be theocratic (and I'm good with that)...
But the gods and godlets (the false idols) worshiped by Americans, the deities that reflect human avarice, selfishness, and desire, do give license to all the sin that harms us: materialism, racism, sexism, sexual libertinism, violence. These and other things are worshiped here..
Of course, whenever we choose to worship idols, we really are worshiping ourselves. We look for the deities--sources of justification--in that which we feel we can manipulate or control. Idolatry makes people unjust monsters and unleashes chaos. Anyone noticed any chaos lately?..
Amos might be a good book for us to be reading today, especially if it causes all of us to turn in repentance and faith to the God ultimately revealed not just to Israel but the whole world in Jesus Christ. Just a thought.
