Press reporting about Brexit has always been largely uninformed. This here reaches the comical (Thread)
1) the ‘compromise plan’ that was reported as new by the spectator has been spoken about ever since 2017.
2) It is correct that it is not the most likely plan. But it seems to be that no side has warmed to it.
3) The perpetual negotiations though actually is the U.K. position. On fisheries. It is what the government wants.
The government wants annual negotiations. They’d be rather significant.
4) And then on trade... yes... here’s the sad news: big deal, small deal, no deal, Eu membership or not: these are our neighbours. We will be negotiating with them forever.
If you have a neighbour you will be painfully aware that this is inevitable.
5) Then, of course, the childish nationalist narrative on level playing field that always comes in two parts. Our standards are the best in the world. You don’t comply? You trade unfairly...
... and in the article the second part: your standards? An illegitimate attempt to attack our competitiveness. Nuance on LPF is thoroughly needed.
6) But then this is lobby journalism, it’s author neither know nor cares about trade. He’s a mouthpiece for his source. Unfortunately the source perpetuates a split:
Public debate is removed from the reality at the table and dramatically so. Let’s see what this will mean in the end.
