New: Scottish government repeatedly raised concerns about living conditions for asylum seekers in Glasgow during pandemic

Communites secretary @ClydesdAileen Campbell wrote three times to @ukhomeoffice about circumstances of those in hotel accommodation
In a letter to @CPhilpOfficial on 8 May, the communities secretary questioned the lack of financial allowances, phone credit and access to digital technology for those in hotel accommodation
When she wrote again on the 11 May, the minister raised concerns about the “impact of being moved into hotel accommodation” on an asylum seeker who had died in Maclays hotel
A third letter, on 19 June, requested details of Home Office plans to move people out of hotels

It noted there had not been replies to the previous two letters

Ms Campbell was due to discuss these issues with the Home Office this afternoon
In Commons, immigration minister @CPhilpOfficial said asylum seekers had been moved into hotel accommodation for their own safety during pandemic and would be moved out “as quickly as possible”
In correspondence, @scotgov acknowledges that while it would “not normally support” the use of hotels that during the #coronavirus emergency they could make it possible to provide asylum seekers with “enhanced support”

Concerns were more about practice than principle
Update: @ClydesdAileen says Home office @CPhilpOfficial has agreed to “reconsider” financial support for those in hotels and to share plan tomorrow for relocating asylum seekers out of hotels
The @ukhomeoffice issued the following statement in response to the @scotgov concerns about conditions for asylum seekers in Glasgow hotels
