It’s a great pleasure to announce the arrival of #CollisionofWorlds out through @OUP_press. My aim was to provide a novel take on the invasion of Mesoamerica and creation of New Spain through a transatlantic, long-term perspective emphasizing material culture. 1/9
The first chapter lays out the deep-history perspective, which looks to archaeological stratigraphy and the fact that the deeper we dig the further back in time we get. It frames the palimpsest history of places like Cholula, where millenia of Mesoamerican history is visible. 2/9
Chapter 2 provides a history from first farmers to pre-Aztec urban civilizations like #Teotihuacan and the Maya. It covers the entangled history of Mesoamerican peoples, their linguistic and cultural boundaries, and their connections through trade, religion, and politics. 3/9
Chapter 3 does the same but for Iberia, from the importation of Fertile Crescent crops and animals through waves of colonizers: Phoenicians, Romans, Goths, and Arabs and Berbers. It shows how the peninsula served as a hinge between the Mediterranean and Atlantic worlds. 4/9
Chapter 4 considers #Aztec (particularly Mexica) and Spanish (particularly Castilian) society on the eve of their encounter, including their similarities/differences in how they drew on historical memory, patron deities, and their urban, social, and economic organization. 5/9
Chapter 5 covers the Spanish invasion of peoples of the coast, such as the Maya and Totonacs. It highlights the different ways that Native peoples interacted strategically with the bearded foreigners given the social and historical circumstances they found themselves in. 6/9
The major Native allies of the Spaniards, the Tlaxcalteca, appear in Ch 6. After weeks of fighting, they make the momentous decision to join the Spaniards in order to attack their traditional foes, the Mexica. New finds shed light on the contexts of this fateful decision. 7/9
The Spanish-Mexica war of 1519-1521 is covered in Ch 7. While the military details and introduction of disease pandemics have been well covered in other works, this account emphasizes physical attributes of the hostilities and new discoveries by Mexican colleagues. 8/9
From the ashes emerged something new. Ch 8 looks at continued Native agency in continued wars of conquest in Mesoamerica and beyond, and the hybrid forms of culture that were neither fully Mesoamerican nor fully Spanish, a New Spain and the foundation of eventual #Mexico. 9/9
PD Ojalá que el libro se pueda traducir a español por una prensa mexicana y agradezco el apoyo de varios colegas y amigos en #México y #España, junto con la banda sonora transatlántica de @cafetacuba y @srchinarro durante la investigación y redacción.
