Happy Canada Day!
I struggled with what to write this year more than most.

2020 has been a strange and difficult year. We are in the midst of a world-wide pandemic. On top of this, the frustration over injustices, bubbling for centuries has boiled over into protest and unrest. Image
This has compounded feelings of disconnect and division for many. It's been a challenging year.

This may seem like a real downer way to present a #CanadaDay note but please read on.

#CanadaDay2020
"Celebrate our present. Embrace our future. Honour our past."

This is a theme I developed a few years ago when thinking about Ladysmith (and by extension Cowichan, BC and Canada). I feel like it speaks to what Canada means to me, especially at this critical time in history.
We 'Honour our past' by telling our story openly and honestly, learning from and building on it. Our history is fascinating, at once amazing and horrific. We must embrace the good and bad. We can reconcile and resolve the injustices that only serve to hold us back as a nation.
'Embrace our future' because change is the only constant. The future will never be what was. We are moving forward. If we embrace this change with open minds and kind hearts to pursue the best outcomes for all, we can build a better future for everyone. A better Canada for all.
We should 'Celebrate our present' because, for all of our faults, we live in the best place on earth. Although we have a long way to go as a nation, we have much to celebrate. Maybe most of all, we celebrate our humbleness in knowing that we still have work to do.
We are a nation, a society, that is ready and willing to do that hard work. We live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, surrounded by millions of Canadians who, like me and you, believe each other and in our country. We believe in Canada.
Through all of this I have never been more hopeful for our kind and humble Canada. Through the pandemic we have come together. We have watched people step up. We have seen communities rally to support each other. We have seen so many work together to support millions in crisis.
Is it perfect? Heck no! Can we be better? Absolutely! I believe in Canada. I believe in Canadians.

No matter what you look like, believe... what gender, race or religion... whatever it is that makes you you... I love my Canadian family.
We all deserve to live in a better world and to me the best chance for better is right here in Canada, with all of us. The best (...and still working on it) country on earth.

...with glowing hearts.

Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦
