Seven lessons 👇🏻
1. Compounding is magic, but it goes really slow before it starts going fast.

The easiest way to make a graph look like this is to have low growth for a long time 🙃 makes the spike look more pronounced.
This is a tweet from April 7, less than 3 months ago and a little under one year in to writing a newsletter.

I had fewer total subscribers then than joined the fam on June 11th alone, which brings us to...
2. Launching our landing page on @ProductHunt was massive.

The Not Boring landing page finished at #2 on Product Hunt on June 11th, driving 729 new subs in one day.

Wouldn’t have worked as well cold, having a community I’d built an audience with on Twitter & email propelled it.
3. Twitter is incredible, even if it feels awkward to tweetstorm as much as I have.

After tweeting into the abyss for > a year, I’m finally getting the hang of it. It’s magic.

Be yourself and share what you learn.

This thread got 121k impressions, which helped launch...
4. The Verified Not Boring Referral Program

We launched a week ago, and already have 433 referrals. I think it’s a 3 step process:
1. Write things that people want to share consistently.
2. See natural word of mouth happening.
3. Pour fuel on the WoM with a referral program.
5. There’s a trade off between going paid and growing, & not every newsletter makes sense for paid.

I thought I’d go paid once I hit 2,500, but 1) the stuff I like writing is too general, and 2) going pays slows growth.

@JayCoDon @austin_rief & @lennysan shaped my thinking 🙏🏻
6. Bring your subscribers along for the ride.

Learning and growing in public, sharing metrics when they were really small, and asking the Not Boring community to be a part of the journey has made this so much more fun.

Every email, I ask for their help, and they’ve delivered.
7. Work with excellent people.

@GambaThomas joined the Not Boring team and led ProductHunt & Referrals.

@damccormick13 edits everything I write and turns fluff into less fluff.

@diymanik designed our beautiful referral page.

The Type House is an incredible community.
Bonus: don’t be afraid to ask people to subscribe. Not Boring is the most fun way to learn about business strategy, and if you’re into that kind of thing, you should subscribe:
