Basically, before we try immune therapy for brain tumors on people, we need a sign that it works. Many researchers treat mice that have brain tumors with the immune therapy first. This way, we can tell if the immune therapy boosts the immune system of mice to attack tumors #btsm

Often, researchers add a gene to the mouse brain tumor to make it glow, or fluoresce. While setting up my translational lab @NIH, we wanted to see if this fluorescent gene changed how the mouse immune system responded to the tumors in the brain. #BTSM

Even though the fluorescent gene did not change how the cells grew in a culture dish, mice rejected these tumors at a high rate. The colored curves in a and b show mice with fluorescent tumors living for a long time without treatment (full information at rdcu.be/b5o6D)

We performed additional studies that showed that the cytokines produced by these flourescent cells were different, and they attracted different types of immune cells to the brain around the tumor. rdcu.be/b5o6D

Our data suggest that groups should use caution when adding fluorescent genes to brain tumor models, if they are going to be testing immune therapies. #BTSM rdcu.be/b5o6D

I expect this study will be a little controversial, as these fluorescent cells have been used for several studies of immune therapeutics. However, anecdotally, many other researchers have told me that they have seen the same inflammatory response to fluorescent cells. #BTSM
