The response to the 1918 pandemic had some remarkably familiar features, as described in this 2010 article (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…). For example, there was debate about the effectiveness of masks... 1/
...followed by a focus on using cloth face coverings. 2/
Although not everyone would follow the guidelines... 3/
Messaging often highlighted how these measures would help protect others. 4/
There was the problem that effective measures could also be highly disruptive... 5/
...and difficult choices about the level of stringency that was required... 6/
...and debate about what was most important to keep open. 7/
There were sometimes mixed messages about the seriousness of the virus... 8/
...and awareness that mild symptoms early in the infection making it difficult to work out who needed to be isolated/quarantined. 9/
It's also worth noting that a lot of the most disruptive measures in the US during 1918 were generally only introduced for a month or two before being relaxed: pnas.org/content/104/18… 10/10
