I appreciate the sentiment and I’m glad that people see how awful cancel culture is, but you’ll have to forgive my skepticism that @michelleinbklyn, who rallied the torches & pitchforks over @SenTomCotton’s op-ed, leading to James Bennet’s ouster, is a signatory. (quick 🧵) 
She pretty explicitly says that giving voice to the opinion of a sitting US Senator, supported by nearly 70% of Americans, is unworthy of publication in the opinion section of the Times (and “proto-fascist”).
And other signatories jumped onboard. @rweingarten endorsed Goldberg’s view on the subject.
It’s an uphill battle to suggest that @HeerJeet is particularly interested in promoting a diversity of opinions.
Goldberg isn’t alone in her view of conservatives as fascists either. @anneapplebaum, another signatory, has said as much about those who support President Trump.
So, yes. Good that cancel culture is being called out. But I think I’ll remain skeptical that those pledging to fight against it today are going to truly battle to defend the beliefs of those who don’t share their view.
