VSB reports to BC Gov so it's "complicated" but wherever you stand on Broadway & Birch being 16 floors or 28 floors, you must advocate for @CityofVancouver to be responsible in ensuring that adequate amenities exist.

Let me try a @j_mcelroy type breakdown for 🏫. #vanpoli #vanre
Let's take the scenario of a young couple living at the future Broadway & Birch with a young child that is about to enter Kindergarten.

The point of this?

To ensure that everyone knows that @CityofVancouver & @VSB39 & @bcedplan need to START planning together & plan better.
L'Ecole Bilinque is just a 10 min walk away. It's a French Immersion School that has 40 Kindergarten spots which are hard to get - kids from any part of Vancouver enter a draw (better term than "lottery") to get them. Consider chances low.
False Creek Elem. is 11 min walk away. This year, it had 76 kids apply for 40 Kindergarten spots. And while is it close, it it is not the catchment school anyways, so zero chance of getting in.
Lord Tennyson, 16 min walk away, is another French Immersion school with 40 Kindergarten spots subject to a city wide application process and subsequent draw. Low chances of getting in.
Emily Carr Elem. Yay! This is the catchment school & it has 60 Kindergarten spots. This year it had 61 register so only 1 was turned away. The batch of existing 0-4 kids & existing construction are your significant competition along with sibling priority so you will enter a draw.
Equidistant to your catchment school, Carr is Hudson Elem., also 23m walk away. It had 98 kids register for 60 Kindergarten spots. While you have a right to apply to the school of your choice, it is only a right if the school has space. So zero chance of getting in at Hudson.
Edith Cavell is a 28 min walk away. 66 kids registered for 40 Kindergarten spots. Same issue: You can't apply at "full schools" so zero chance here.

Aside: Cavell is being seismically updated soon & then will be expanded later, costing way more than doing it together! 🤯
Shaughnessy Elem., a 30 min walk away, is your likely school! It had only 37 kids register for 60 Kindergarten spots and serves as an "overflow" school taking in the kids turned away from other schools. So if you lose the draws for Carr or French Immersion, your kid may be here.
Simon Fraser Elem., a 31 min walk away is the champion of turning away kids. 115 registered for 40 spots meaning & draw was likely for 20ish spots since siblings get priority. Sadness for many families here.
General Gordon Elem., is a 37 min walk away. It had 90 kids register for 60 Kindergarten spots. By now, you know the drill for "full schools" outside of your catchment = can't apply and zero chance.
Also a 37 min walk away is Mt. Pleasant Elem., and you may think that you have a chance since only 33 kids registered for 60 Kindergarten spots, but it's "complicated" so you can consider this school official overflow for False Creek. Ex: Many Olympic Village kids turned away.
Summary:

Obviously, what's missing from this analysis would be the future Olympic Village School (hoping @Rob_Fleming not Waiting for Godot) but that would be 60 Kindergarten spots and if we just add up existing spots needed, we need more today. Much more spots needed in future.
