Betsy DeVos is "very seriously" considering withholding funds from schools that don’t open.

Trump refused use the Defense Production Act to mass produce PPE because he didn't want to bring down the "heavy hand of government.”

This is actually a good way to kill public schools.

Look, I get that kids don't learn well at home.

But forcing kids to school during the outbreak of a pandemic without adequate safety measures is lunacy.

Some areas are almost out of ICU beds.

2/
This places enormous hardships on lower income families and parents without job flexibility.

Families with resources have alternatives.

For middle and high school, there are good on-line programs for about $2,500 per year. But families need the $. And kids need monitoring.

3/
The "kids need to be in school to learn and grow" argument fails when kids bring home disease and their parents get sick and family members die.

Even if it's true (and we're still learning about the disease) that kids have less risks, what about teachers, staff, and parents?

4/
One thing going on is a view of government—long held by the GOP—that using government to help people (supply PPE, issue regulations that save lives) is a misuse of public funds.

Meanwhile, they're willing to bring down the heavy hand of government—when it suits them.

5/
In many areas, there are probably ways to open schools safely with proper funding, equipment, and strict safety measures.

Trump can't take those steps because doing so admits weakness and alerts people of the risk.

I wrote about that last night ⤵️

6/
This makes sense to me, and is pretty much what I wrote about last night⤵️

Trump is in a panic. He understands that an unfolding economic crisis in the fall dooms him.

So his minions are out there mocking people who want safety measures.

I suspect the threat to withhold funds is mostly a way to signal what Trump wants districts do to, and to give GOP-led areas cover. They take their cues and fall in line. Fox viewers believe what they hear on Fox.

I have a friend who is a doctor. I asked her about this ⤵️

She said, "It depends on how you emphasize 'goal.'
Yes it is best for kids to be in school, but not until it is safe.

I asked her why an academy would make such a statement.

She said. . .

9/
. . . "Perhaps trying to walk the tightrope between what is right and not getting in Trumps crosshairs, much as Dr. Burke has done."

I understand he's the president of the United States, but why so much fear about crossing him?

Now this⤵️

Some people, of course, do have the courage to stand up to Trump. (h/t @marywag2947)

Also, earlier today, Kayleigh McEnany leaves the podium, White House reporter Brian Karem shouts this question. . .

11/
"Kayleigh, if it's safe to send people back to schools, is it safe to send Manafort back to prison?"

The Trump-FOX-GOP doesn't worry about being consistent.

They don't let facts or logic get in their way.

When I asked the question, "Why so much fear about crossing him?" I thought of Vindman.
We see courage to stand up to Trump.
We also see Trump's vindictiveness.
