This morning I made a joke that I thought was hilarious. Since then, at the prompting of many well-meaning social media advocates, I chose to take off my twitter-tinted glasses and go back and read what @JK_Rowling has said regarding issues of sex, feminism, and trans-advocacy.

After doing so, and taking the time to think about it, I have to say I was wrong. In an article posted to her public page, Rowling gives her support for the trans community, while addressing concerns she has as a woman.

In my white, cis-gender opinion (take it with a boulder of salt), she does not demonize trans people.
Don't get me wrong, she certainly doesn't help them here. But I think this calls for a solution that I, nor she, is capable of producing. How do (not can) we protect everybody?

To be clear, I thought I meant well. I feared she was trying to strip trans people of their identities, and embolden bigots who would then use her words to take away their rights. And that is absolutely unacceptable.

While I don’t agree with everything she outlined in her article, I think it exemplifies a giant hole in our society which is largely caused by men.

I know that I will never know what it’s like to be a woman. I will never experience the fears or injustices of women; same as I will never experience those of trans people; and that is the textbook definition of privilege. But I do understand why people were hurt by this.

I don't get to tell trans people not to be mad at JK, same as I don't get to tell women they're wrong to support her.

Now, don't get me wrong. If you are openly transphobic, or advocate for violence against trans people, I do get to tell you you're wrong and to go fuck yourself.

But in conclusion, I just want to say I'm sorry. Sorry to Jo, sorry I don't have the answers, and sorry that we live in a world where these are even problems that need answers to. #IStandWithJKRowling #TransLivesMatter
