A thread on #CancelCulture
To start, I oppose it. If I didn’t, I’d probably also be one of those who would be cancelled. Because I am very vocal about my views on white people and white control in #aidl, #globaldev and #migration. And I’m not always polite about it. 1
I used to be one of those compliant, obedient dev workers, always eager to please the white expats. And my career grew because of it to an extent. Until I grew older and more observant of exactly what was going on around me. 2
I wanted to speak out, but was afraid I’d loose my work. i moved overseas thinking I would at least have a chance to speak up and be heard there. Didn’t happen. I was sidelined more abroad I was in my own country. No one wanted to hear what I had to say lest I offended anyone 3
And then suddenly students on campuses started to make noise about who they thought was racist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. And yes, many of these people had views that were offensive and dangerous. But as the cancel movement took control, it made way for only the same voices4
to find even more space. Spaces to debate actually shrunk, leaving people like myself even more isolated. I stood for challenging Western global norms. I even challenged my own religion and how it had stereotyped women for the fascination of the West. And yes, what I had to say 5
Would “offend” many. But it was not hate. It was a point of view which would make people uncomfortable. And discomfort comes in many shades and levels. if we start cancelling even the very slightest of disagreements, we will have no chance to know what and if anything is wrong 6
we Allow the most vile to hold the highest of office around the world. But we cannot stand hearing what may go against certain sensibilities. i belong to a world where #cancelculture is actually life-threatening for many. Literally. 7
The West has turned it into a silly, childish prank, instead of a real truth-telling instrument that we sorely need. We mustnt let this generation silence dissent, both good and bad. Or it will destroy us. 8 End. Thanks to @KarlreMarks for inspiring 🙂
