Hi everyone, this is Da Hae from NAPAWF. Sadly, no would-be pithy tweets from me today, as I take over our account to share the SCOTUS ruling from PA v Trump, also known as Little Sisters. #HandsOffMyBC
If you’ll remember, this case was about whether the Administration can allow employers with religious or moral objections to exempt itself from the ACA’s requirement that health care plans must cover contraception. Today, SCOTUS ruled employers can do that
Justice Thomas sent this case back down to the lower courts and dissolved the nationwide preliminary injunction. This ruling is a clear blow for many. As Justice Sotomayor piercingly pointed out during oral arguments, 75k to 120k women would be affected
Religious private employers can ALREADY claim an exemption. And Little Sisters, a religious org, were already exempt. I’m concerned about what this would mean for tens of thousands that Justice Sotomayor pointed out.
Justice Ginsburg, dissenting: “this Court leaves women workers to fend for themselves, to seek contraceptive coverage from sources other than their employer’s insurer, and, absent another available source of funding, to pay for contraceptive services out of their own pockets."
Access to contraception is particularly important for women in low-wage jobs, who are disproportionately women of color. When women are able to access and use contraception, they have more control over if, when, and how they want to parent.
Around two million AAPI women gained coverage for birth control under the ACA. #HandsOffMyBC
We need healthcare. We need contraceptives. And no legal ruling changes this simple fact.
Today’s decision was very disheartening. And we are troubled by what it may mean. BUT! The fight continues. We will continue to tell those trying to take away our rights to contraceptives, #HandsOffMyBC
