A very good morning to you all and thank you @mentorshipzim for the opportunity. My session will focus on investing in the Artisanal & Small Scale Mining sector (ASM) in Zimbabwe - entry level into the bullion industry.
I'm not an expert but will share experiences from the
- industry gained from the past decade.
With this session let's interact, ask questions and answer on anything pertaining to gold. We'll discuss issues around 1. ENTRY into the sector 2. Contribution of the sector to the national economy 3. Myths surrounding gold mining
4. Most importantly, the process of obtaining a gold mining claim/ permit/ block in Zim and 5. Anything GOLD.
#Mining requires passion, commitment, discipline, patience & what I will call LUCK - Labour Under Correct Knowledge..
Gold is Zimbabwe's top mineral earner. On average; bullion contributes 38% of the country's total export earnings & more than 60% of the mining sector exports.
According to RBZ data : Zim has one of the huge gold reserves per square Km in the world - accounting for 13 million
- tonnes of proven reserves of which 580 tonnes have been exploited since 1980. You see the need for more players?
Official data from Fidelity Printers and Refiners (FP) shows gold deliveries of 24.8T, 33.2T & 27.6T from 2017 to '19 resp with the ASM accounting for 60%.
Despite facing a plethora of challenges, ASM have delivered more gold as compared to primary producers (Large Scale Miners - LSM).
Zim is targeting 100T of the precious metal per year by 2023, a figure which is expected to help the sector earn US12 Billion annually.
With this background info, lets interact as I switch to my journey as an entrepreneur - most importantly, becoming a gold Miner.
I'll be here for 2 sessions so we've enough time to catch-up and talk about gold.
For now, What were you told about gold mining?
Who said mining is for mining professional only? Who said construction is for builders only?
My journey into becoming a business owner & miner....
I'm a young man in his early 30's who started doing gold soon after high school '06 before enrolling at local university to study.
I started as a mukorokoza (illegal cum artisanal miner) in '06 after a call from my uncle. He told me about the gold rush in Mazowe and did not hesitate to join in.
As a son of a single parent, the need to stand in for my father came earlier in my teens than I ever imagined.
Went to mine for family and savings for my tuition. Enrolled at university to study Hons in Economics whilst was mining already for income. Had to balance between school work & the search for (gold) tuition money.
It was the beginning of a journey and half......
Come 2008 - 09, as I was mining our govt introduced operation "chikorokoza chapera" 😢 which chased all illegal miners from the bush. That made me realise the need to formalise and do mining as a business not a hobby....
Now came the biggest hurdle, balancing on tuition, upkeep and capital to formalise.
'09 USD were introduced, we're selling our gold in forex and had to settle costs in forex.
Then, registering seemed almost impossible save for the extensive reading I'd started - wealth n busines
The book #TheRichestManInBabylon taught me building wealth that I did not retire on my goal of formalizing. The insights on the need to gather & building wealth kept me going. Had to run from ZRPolice many times without a number, adopt working at night, hiding the gold in socks😂
-among many ways to avoid being locked for kukorokoza was illegal.
Registered my first claim in 2011 and company 2012 *finally.
However the registration process chewed all my savings and was left with no start-up capital....Had to think of the next move!
The cost of continuing illegally to build capital + police was high that it wasn't worthy persuing.
Sorry to say, that book taught me to work for myself, only. Joined a day's formal job but left in less 1 year😂😂 and migrated to RSA.
It's in RSA were i started doing contract mining in Limpopo & Eastern Cape with the help of my RSA brothers. We registered a business and started operations in contract mining & ventilation shaft developments (where the construction idea kicked in).....
Came back '14, registered a few more gold claims and started building a gold custom & milling plant in Chinhoyi. Dec '15, my structures were destroyed by the local tertiary institution over a land dispute. It marked the start of some expensive litigation for 3 bad years😢
Went to High Court and was such an experience as a young man in his 20's fighting a govt institution with "land that they're given by the Chancellor who's also the CIC of the Defence Forces" #justimagine #sad story for another day.
Now was working from my other claims for working
-capital, upkeep & expensive litigation.
Started a construction business #Generation_Civils in '17 ......Fast forward '18, I won the legal battle with a compansation🙏🏾🙏🏾
Started mining full scale, registering a few more blocks of gold claims and increase scale of operations.
We now do gold mining, processing, vat leaching of sands and an Elution Plant in Harare.
That's my story....
I'm taking a break, but i will be here answering your questions and provide some information you may require.
I will return later in the day with the process of registering a gold mining claim in Zimbabwe - from the Prospecting permit to the registration certificate 🙏🏾
Good day
Evening good people, hoping that you'd a "golden" day.
Let's talk about the registration process for a single block of claim (s)_<10Ha.
The following are a few selected fees for ASM sector:
The Mining (General) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 are contained in SI95 of 2020 -
1. Ordinary Prospecting license ZWL$1000
2. Application & Registration license ZWL$1000
3. Ore Removal Permit ZWL$100 valid for 3 months - this applies to miners who use custom milling plants
4. Annual Fees ZWL$1125/5Ha , this translate to ZWL$2250/10Ha block
5. Gold Jewellery permit ZWL$2500
6. Permit for explosives storage ZWL$500/yr
7. Permit to acquire and possess explosives ZWL$2500
Seeing these charges, you'd ask yourself while are you not mining?
The registration process:
The Ministry of Mines & Mining Development has decentralized its operations to Provinces. Previously all mining applications and other related matters were centralised at the Harare HQ.
Meaning all applications are now being done at provincial offices-
-eg Chinhoyi office for Mash West, Gweru Office for Midlands, Gwanda Office for Matebeleland etc.
U'd know the province in which your mining district falls.
There are options when registering a mine / claim ie Ordinary block, Special grant & EPO. However, for now, we're
-limiting our conversation to registering a single block / ordinary <10Ha gold block. With time permitting, can touch on the other 2.
Will cover the following registration steps :
- Prospecting permit
- Pegging
- Mapping
- Registration (Licensing)
- Beacons
1. Prospecting Permit
Ordinary Prospecting licence fee is ZWL$1000 and is payable on application. The applicant must be 18yr/older. The applicant must provide his full names and permanent address - which shall appear on the licence issued to him - to the mining commissioner Copy of a Prospecting licence
The Prospecting licence is issued over the counter, with no waiting period.
ONE Prospecting licence for ONE block.
Please bear in mind, this is not a mine registration certificate!! Have heard of situations were people mine with only the Prospecting licence and claim ownership
- of a piece of land. This permit doesn't give title.

Validity: the prospecting licence shall be valid until and inclusive of the second anniversary of the date of issue. It's valid for 2years.
Where can one prospect?
All state land and communal land is open for prospecting, including all Pvt land in the title to which there has been reserved to the Govt of Zimbabwe (GoZ).
The law stars that all land is open for prospecting.
No drilling or excavation work, whether on surface or underground save if it's for sampling and prospector shall put a *PROSPECTING NOTICE* on the ground open for prospecting.
**A copy of this notice will be attached to your papers for submission at the mines office.
- Your mines plan (to be covered later) must also highlight the position of the Prospecting notice.
Prospecting Notices:

Before exercising the right to prospect, you must give notice in writing to the following departments :
a. Local authority and or Pvt occupier of the Land eg farmers. Pliz there's need to perfectly coexist with our local farmers, who happen to be the owners
- of the land.... No need to bully our farmers because of the Mines & Minerals Act taking precedence over any land use act in place
b. CEO of the Forestry Commission in the case of a demarcated forest
c. Local authority (RDC) in the case of communal land
The notice shall be valid for 120 days from the date it was posted.

I rest here, will pick up in the morning and run it through.
For now we can discuss on anything that was covered today.
Thanks class😂😀 for paying attention and may the Almighty 🙏🏾 give you golden rewards...
A very "golden" morning to you all.
My personal handle is @MandereJohn not @JohnMandere...have had enquiries on this.
After obtaining your Prospecting licence, the next step is pegging.

2. PEGGING
Engage the services of a qualified and registered pegger. Enquire with your
- Provincial Mines office, they have the database of all registered peggers in that region. You need to be watchful of this coz "everyone" can be a "pegger"😂
Peggers charge between USD$300 - $500 for their services. If you search very well, some of the peggers have information
-of high grade areas ( this is not guaranteed**). When pegging, you go with the pegger to the proposed area, obtains coordinates of the places of interest eg existing trenches, reef (belt) outcrops or any visible fault lines.
A block shall be pegged in regular form - a parallelo
-gram (plan) not exceeding 500m in length & 200m in breadth ie <10Ha.
The drawing and plotting of the mine plan is done by a registered pegger 😂
When pegging, please avoid unnecessary pegging over existing+ current (up to date) claims. However, one can peg on forfeited claims
- ones who's licences expired / abandoned sites.

Please note that NO pegging is done at night; between 6pm - 6am.
3. MAPPING
This is also done by the pegger and his $300-$500 includes this process.
From the site, s/he goes to the mines office and obtain a copy of the mines map of the area which you want to peg. The mines map shows already existing claims in the area + forfeited claims (if
- any) & also free spaces (unoccupied pieces of land) open for prospecting.
He draws / plots your coordinates (mine plan). A single block should measure <10Ha
Pegging and mapping have no specific timelines but the earlier the better.
4. REGISTRATION (LICENSING)
This is done once the pegging and plotting has been completed. The pegger submits your application + maps + drawings to the Provincial Mines (Mining Commissioner) office for processing. The registration fee is ZWL$1000 payable on submittion
The following shall be submitted to the mines office:
a. Prospecting licence
b. Copy of Prospecting notice
c. Plan (claims drawing) in triplicate, showing the position and lettering of pegs, and also the position of the prospecting notice
d. Copy of the pegger's registration
- certificate.
You're issued with a receipt upon payment of the registration fee.
PLEASE DO NOT LOSE THE RECEIPT. You will use it as your reference when following up on your papers.
Registration is somehow taking long than expected due to "backlogs" of pending applications from
- 3 years back, please do your follow-up regularly, + call the offices until you obtain your licence.
When registration is done, the applicant shall be issued with a certificate of registration together with the copy of the mine plan.
Also to note, before you're issued with your registration certificate, the mines officials (mainly but not limited to - Survey Dept) conduct a site visit. This is meant to check for existing structures or any developments on the ground, to avoid desputes and double allocation
Attached are pictures of the Mine plan and registration certificate for your information:
5. BEACONS
This must be done within a period of 2 months from the date of issue of the registration certificate. All the ground pegs shall be replaced by stone beacons or beacons consisting of concrete or mason work
Beacons are mainly placed on corner coordinates of the blocks
- ie at least 4 beacons on each claim.
With these your claim is fully registered. Attached is a beacon that we're installing at one of my site in Mashonaland West!!
Now we can discuss on the registration process!! Any additions & / subtractions are most welcome for the benefit of everyone on the platform.
muchas gracias y que Dios los bendiga🙏🏾🙏🏾
TIPS & TAKEAWAYS
1. Always use the right office for right information, follow laid down procedures on registration knowing that delay is not denial.
2. When pegging, use a registered pegger well versed with the district you want to prospect.
3. Always engage with the local farmer
- from day 1 to avoid unnecessary land desputes that may lead to unnecessary & costly litigation. Consider partnership (syndicates) in the event, they're also interested parties
4. You can apply as an individual or syndicate & / a company
5. All state land is open for prospecting
6. Always conduct due diligence - geo survey + sampling - before partnerships, committing working capital or buying heavy mining equipment for extraction & processing
7. Most Reserved Areas (RA) have been opened for prospecting, just get information from your provincial office..
8. Start mining when all the paperwork is in place... It can take ages but commit to DOING THE RIGHT THING
9. Do not bribe any mining official coz payback is tomorrow and very costly
10. YOUTHS & WOMEN have an edge in this registration process since they're previously sidelined
- Advocacy groups like Youth & or Women In Mining (YIM, WIM) have been vocal and their noise was heard. They've been given preference & syndicates are getting licences in no time. YOU'D CAPITALIZE ON THAT!!!
