HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE - Recovery trial results finally out - and hopefully puts nail in coffin. Out of 4700 people randomized... HCQ did NOT lower #covid19 mortality. It anything it was trending in wrong direction. Thread 🧵 medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
2) what about older/younger? Nope. What happened men vs women? Nope. What about early very late? Nope. What about on ventilator, oxygen or none? NOPE NOPE NOPE!
3) “Patients allocated to hydroxychloroquine were less likely 40 to be discharged from hospital alive within 28 days (60.3% vs. 62.8%; rate ratio 0.92)”. So hospital discharge is actually bad for HCQ.
4) HCQ also increased risk of progressing to composite endpoint of invasive mechanical ventilation or death (29.8% vs. 26.5%; risk ratio= 1.12, 1.01-1.25). Again, bad for HCQ. And again, this was a randomized trial.
5) Bottomline- HCQ didn’t lower mortality. If anything, those randomized to HCQ were discharged from hospital SLOWER than usual care controls. And those randomized to HCQ were ventilated/died (composite) more quickly. No diff by age, gender, early/late, and by severity. #covid19
6) Also it didn’t cause cardiac arrhythmia with any difference either. While they could have shown more results by diabetes other risk factors. results are “robust” across enough subgroups. Oxford group legit, and it was done in the UK’s @NHSuk- data is verified. No Surgisphere.
7) I’ve probably looked at tens of thousands of trial reports in my life, many junk, many okay, some excellent. This RECOVERY trial rates among one of the top class trials—they also did the big dexamethasone trial. More Recovery data coming. Stay tuned. medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
