People tell me “I won't support the Guardian, because I disagree with much of what it says.” I disagree with much of it too. But isn’t that a good thing? Plurality means greater reach and impact, and a discussion, not a sermon.
I also agree that the Guardian doesn't always get the balance right. It's not perfect. None of us are. But we need a media platform that has a big enough income to expose the Windrush Scandal, Cambridge Analytica and 1000 other outrages, that isn't owned by a billionaire.
The ownership issue is crucial. Most newspapers are owned by billionaires or multimillionaires. They are, as a class, not neutral. They want a world that's good for people like them. Less tax, less regulation, fewer workers rights and trade unions. They use their papers to get it
Even "liberal" billionaires are likely to discourage investigation of issues in which they have interests. And billionaires tend to have interests in a lot of issues.
They appoint editors in their own image, who represent their interests without being told.
The ownership of the media is a major determinant of the politics we get. We need a big, well-funded media platform that is not owned by a plutocrat, or overseen by the government.
Please support the Guardian, even if you don't always agree.
