Thread 1/7 An unknown Russian troll army was detected. The army was very active in spreading #MH17 propaganda. With @ukraine_world and support by @NATOinUkraine an investigation was done as part of a training of Ukrainian journalists. ukraineworld.org/articles/infow…
2/7 with both software from @trollrensics and manually a spike in #MH17 articles from zen.yandex.ru was detected at the beginning of the MH17 courtcase. Trainers for this project are @JvanDijkS and myself.
3/7 The research was done using only 1 Twitter account. Other accounts were found but if there is a troll army you will find the other accounts anyways. During the training the work was done manually with only troll account.
4/7 Analysis shows that the trolls were created in groups on very specific dates. Profile pictures are stolen. Trolls follow each other and all share the same articles.
5/7 Using @trollrensics software to analyze tweet behavior shows that part of the troll army are very heavily automated bots. 
6/7 Just finding a troll army is interesting but the next step is to analyze who is behind it. The trolls strangely only did likes on @ObninskchessRu and the zen.yandex.ru articles that they tweet are of the Obninskchess.ru Yandex page.
7/7 The trolls all follow the @ObninskchessRu account and the account follows them. We found the troll master! By e-mail we asked the director of the chess club and the admin of the site about their troll army, they refused to answer.
