Here is something that really disturbs me. I asked @USDANutrition @TeamNutrition 's Brandon Lipps this really important question to which I could not get an answer. "There is a 9-year old African American boy who lives in urban - anywhere. He is already struggling with…
obesity at his young age. He eats breakfast and lunch at school (when we had school), and at night his dinner is determined by government subsidies. Will the 2020 US Dietary Guidelines help this child?" Of course he had no answer because he and everyone else…
involved know that the answer is no. He is not like so many other children this age and younger who have developed T2D while eating at least 2 meals a day at school which adhere to the DGA's. No, he does not have T2D - yet. What will it be like over the next 5 years for him....
when the DGA's roll around again? Well, he will be eating a lot of refined and processed grains from school as that is the only way to meet nutrient sufficiency according to the guidelines. The guidelines provide no options to attain nutrient sufficiency from whole food for ...
this boy or any others like him. He will continue to be told that wheat bread and low-fat yogurt are good for him and that good tasting full fat dairy and beef are bad. We already know his risk for obesity and diabetes as an adult is very high. By age 14 after eating food....
at school dictated by the DGA's his risk will be greater. IF, of course, he has not developed diabetes by then. Is he not following the guidelines? Should we blame him for his current condition? "If only he had followed them, he would be fine." Really?....
This little boy deserves to get food at school that will keep him disease free and help him with weight loss. However, no such help will be coming his way. This little boy needs us and despite all the collective effort to ensure that…
the DGA's are based on the most rigorous review of the evidence and provide recommendations for all Americans, they again only represent the 12% of us (adults) with no metabolic disease and of course they represent bias, and industry. .....
We have failed this little boy and all the others like him who deserve to be fed the 2+ meals a day that they get from school or other government programs food that will help and not hurt them. We all deserve recommendations that meet nutrient sufficiency with real food....
otherwise all the screaming about processed food really rings hollow. We all deserve recommendations that are not influenced by industry. The list could go on and on. We can't get these things from the DGA's so we have to start asking the question. Why have them in the...
first place? The DGA's have failed all of us and quite frankly they should just go.
