The next years will be a rolling media expose of everything Trump did that his enablers knew - but now have incentive to reveal.
Impossible to prove but I’m convinced that the Trump election victory enthused even radicalised a lot of Brexit supporters as evidence the “world was going their way”...
..but the opposite is also true. Post Trump Brexit looks & feels weaker. Less zeitgeist & more a problem.
A Trump-less Brexit all of a sudden changes the whole dynamic.
Britain will be seen - and see itself - as an outlier with a massive challenge to solve not part of the new zeitgeist. Biden will look to rebuild US leadership & this his 1st calls will be to Berlin & Paris.
Here’s a prediction:
If Trump loses - Johnson will immediately renounce him but say that it “was UKs duty to work with him when President”.
It doesn’t really matter if Johnson lying or not - a Trump defeat will mark the point that fasco-populism no longer looks inevitable.
The 1st things Biden will say in any victory speech:
1. Heal our country’s partisan divide
2. Work with our european allies
3. End destructive racial divisions & white supremacy
Where does Brexit take comfort in that?
Answer: It doesn’t.
At the lower end of the intellectual spectrum many Brexit supporters bought the myth Trump will “look after Britain” with a nice trade deal.
Bonkers of course - but this comfort blanket will die the moment Trump loses.
Instantly a softer Brexit will gain in acceptance.
