Had this paper not come about, we wouldn't have know!🙄
On a serious note, if the US did not have such a fantastic record of screwing-up on its commitments, Indian military would be inclined to have US equipment. There's a reason for it - Russian equipment still carries the +
+ design philosophy of USSR.
- Basically, a system which can be produced, inducted and deployed on a large scale.
- Where quantity was to overcome quality short-fall.
- But Indian Armed Forces use them in much smaller qty. Where the individual quality of equipment matters +
+
- US equipment is made as hi-tech as possible and is capable of very superior performance on sustained basis.
- So, given size of our holding and usage philosophy, US equipment makes more sense.
- Low mean-time-between-failure (MTBF), proper supply of spares, easy maintenance +
+ expensive up-front but lowe over life-cycle cost etc.
- Why do you think IAF loves Mirage-2000 and wanted nothing else but Rafale?
- Apaches, P-8I, Chinook, C-17, C-130J - all are superlative equipments capable of sustained performance and high uptime.
- But what do we +
+ actually do?
- Use equipment made as per USSR philosophy and expect them to perform as equipment made as per US philosophy!
- Well, this is not to say that all Russian equipments are unworthy or US are fantastic.
- We take what is best for us from both of them.
+
+
- But Indian Military leadership does not trust the Americans.
- Even the US requires India to dot the i's and cross the t's before it sells anything.
- So what we do? Well, we buy from Israel and France!
