At Salmon Street Springs, different groups, including folks with drums and other instruments, have been gathering and are preparing to march toward the justice center. We'll be following the Portland Black Lives Matter protests tonight with this thread. (video by @a_hardgrave)
This is Day 58 of sustained protests throughout the city of Portland, and the evening is kicking off with a dance party on the waterfront. Here's the vibe:
A crowd of at least 1,000 people is already in downtown Portland, and there's a car parade for Black Lives Matter circling and driving along 4th, Jefferson, Salmon and 3rd.
There's a large line outside @riotribs, which announced today they’ve received more than $300K in donations to provide free food and snacks to Portland protesters. It's so much money, they've stopped taking cash donations.
Lots of different groups marching tonight: the Wall of Moms is back, as well as the Dads. There's a group in chef hats, health care workers in scrubs, social workers wearing green, and here's the Asians for Black Liberation.
Portland Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty speaks to Friday night's crowd outside the Justice Center: "You know what's worse than making a Portlander mad? Telling a Portlander what they can't do."
Hardesty speaks to changes to the police bureau, which saw a $27 million budget cut for the upcoming fiscal year:
The crowd in downtown Portland is larger tonight, at *least* 4,000 people. There are still more marchers on the way, and this is just the crowd outside the justice center. There's also people outside the federal courthouse in the adjacent city block.
Tonight, in addition to the "Wall of Moms", Portland has a "Wall of Vets" lined up to protest outside the federal courthouse. (photos by @killendave)
Video view of the "Wall of Vets" that has lined up outside the federal courthouse in downtown Portland Friday night.
A sea of illuminated cell phones as Black Lives Matter protests continue for Day 58 in Portland.
Some protesters were shaking the fence around the courthouse.
Moments ago, federal agents deployed tear gas.
A cloud of tear gas lingers in the air outside the federal courthouse where Portland protesters are still gathered.
"PDX Dad Pod" is here with leaf blowers, using them against the tear gas. Federal officers have used gas and impact munitions, including pepper balls, seen in this clip.
The Moms remain.
Here's the scene at one spot along the fence:
