I think this is the key point that "realists" like Paul Mason aren't facing up to. The Labour right aren't going to settle for administrative control & a purge of the left. That's just for starters. They want to shift policy, & not just back to twenty years ago.
They believe the Tories will (eventually) alienate voters by managerial incompetence & moving too far to the right to satisfy their base. This will open up a space in the "centre ground" for a Labour party that is competent, progressive (in a neoliberal sense) & patriotic.
The more far-sighted of them also think this will allow them to complete the Blairite revolution: disempowering the unions within the party; disempowering the public sector unions in the delivery of policy; & marginalising social movements as "left-tainted" & ineffective.
