This report from John Elflein of @Statista shows there is still quite a disparity in death rates from state to state:

To match New Jersey's death rate, Florida would need to reach 38,000 deaths. Right now, Florida has 5,853. (Obviously the virus hit NJ earlier.)
Similarly, California would have to hit almost 70,000. Currently it has 8,429.
If anyone thinks I am distorting this or misinterpreting, let me know. I caught myself on something last week (see below) and had to correct, and I will do so if I am overlooking something here.
Btw... rate in New York City is 272 deaths per 100,000.
