The protest followed brutal riots in East St. Louis, Illinois on July 1,1917. A white mob set fire to the city’s black neighborhoods, and lynched, shot, or burned alive as many as 200 African Americans. Thousands more were displaced and left the city. 
The march went down Fifth Avenue from 56th Street to Madison Sq.
Children led the way, followed by groups of women in white dresses & men in dark suits. There was no singing or chanting, just the muffled thump of drums.

Marchers in New York City on July 28 held signs protesting racial violence & demanding fair treatment: “We have fought for the liberty of white Americans in six wars; our reward is East St. Louis."
