You guys, somehow, Thing 2 and I were in a tweet by the first lady, celebrating #ADA30. Skip to 2:00.

She's right. The ADA has opened doors for Thing 1. But there is also so much more that needs to be done. Let's start with where that picture was taken. Hold on 1/9
That is form a @usedgov expo for educational games held earlier this year. We had just bought Thing 2 a switch control for use with her iPad. I struggled to find appropriate apps for her. So what better way than to ask the app developers. 2/9 Picture of child in a wheelchair with her mom talking to som
Of the app developers we spoke with, only one could speak to and ensure their app was switch accessible. That was @PBSKIDS. Not exactly the "public/private" partnership lauded in this video. Everyone else just said the app was "screenreader accessible." #a11y 3/9
Accessible tech is more than one checkbox a software engineer's list. Next to "make a smiley face for the right answer" It's a process. Not an afterthought.

It's about colors, sizes, resizing, and more. #a11y 4/9
The tool our district used didn't let you resize, and so all of the buttons (like the mute button) simply are too small for thing 2 to accurately hit. We have to do it all for her.

You didn't think I'd let Blackboard go unscathed in this thread, did you? #a11y 5/9
And look, no one wants to send their kids back to school more than I do. Thing 2 requires full support while attending any school, in-person or virtual. And I already passed 3rd grade. When she does remote learning, we have to sit right next to her and assist her, all day. 6/9
But as our district discussed in-person return, it was clear they did not have the resources or supports to send anyone to school safely, much less Thing 2. Her physical needs require her and her wheelchair to be touched, handled, washed, and disinfected all day long. 7/9
If you want to safely send kids to school, you need to FULLY FUND AND FULLY SUPPORT THEM. That's not happening.

You need to put in the work to make it safe. And work seems to be the thing this administration is unwilling to do.

8/9
But Most of all, WE NEED TO STEM THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS. You don't get to say "hey, kids in Europe are going back, why can't we" without taking ALL THE OTHER STEPS they took to make it possible. Steps we as a nation don't seem willing to take. WEAR A MASK! #wearamask. 9/9
And because I can never let go of a grudge, despite what @andersoncooper and @60Minutes would have you believe, it's not that easy to go around suing businesses that aren't accessible, and they do exist. I filed 3 complaints before I realized the system was a joke.
And of course, let's not forget the fact that this administration is suing to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which does so much to protect my child with disabilities, including protection for preexisting conditions.
