I spent a couple of hours in my classroom yesterday attending an online class after an informal on-site meeting. It really is where I love to be. I want to be excited to be prepping my room for a new school year. 1/7
Instead, I’m worried. Our meeting was to try to fit together all the moving parts of in-person learning and safety. It felt like being handed two puzzles and asked to make one puzzle out of all the pieces from both. 2/7
It’s...a lot. Even in our small building there are challenges that feel insurmountable. We are expected to open full time, everyone in the building every day. We will do everything possible to keep everyone safe... 3/7
and without step 1: cases in our area being down, I’m afraid we’re destined to fail. People will get sick in my school community, people may die. 4/7
And before you @ me about “living in fear,” remember that the health and welfare of 150 young people is my responsibility and that I have a plan for what to do if someone comes into my room with the intent to harm my students. It doesn’t involve hiding myself. 5/7
None of us know how all this will play out. I hope I’m wrong about the danger. I hope no one gets sick. I certainly hope no one dies. 6/7
I guess right now I’m shifting my focus to what I can control: giving students the tools to make necessary trouble. #TeacherLife #ReopenSafely 7/7
