The average Japanese kid spends 87 hours per year learning English in class. The average Indian 'English medium' kid spends 1500 hours per year learning English in class. Japan has 26 Nobel Prizes in STEM fields. India with 10 times more population has 4. #MotherTongueEducation
The average Swedish kid spends 80 hours per year learning English. The average Indian kid spends 1500 hours per school year learning English. Sweden has 19 Nobel Prizes in STEM fields. India with 130 more population has 4.
130 times* more
Okay. Minor correction. Assuming 9 months of school per year, 22 school days per month and 6 hours per day of English medium instruction, average Indian English medium kids spend 9*22*6=1188 ~ 1200 hours PER SCHOOL YEAR learning or learning IN English.
If English is taught as a subject for 1 hr every day instead of medium of instruction, kids would spend 200 hrs/yr instead of 1200 hrs. What a WASTE of 1000 hours in class! That is the time they could spend on understanding concepts, sports, arts etc that will last a lifetime!
Forget Nobel Prize. Let us look at Math Olympiad results starting from 1959. For a country that is obsessed with the "engineer-doctor" chant and for all the claims that English should be mandatory because it is the lang of science & technology, the results are worse than abysmal
The Math Olympiad has been on since 1959 and these are the all time best ten. While US, Soviet/Russia have dominated from early on, note the ones that have made giant strides in recent decades - China, Korea, VIETNAM!
Forget top ten. Let us see if we won anything even by fluke in the last 60 years. Nope! We won it exactly ZERO times.
Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, even war-torn IRAN have won it a bunch of times between them. See the top ranked country for every year since 1959
Okay... we didn't win the top spot. You can't always win Gold.. but did we at least do well consistently. Nope! Not even close
Okay.. all this is ancient history. Macaulay and Nehru spoilt us. We have become a superpower since 2014. So let us see a recent result from 2017 - BANGLADESH, Argentina, Kazakhstan, Poland, Romania, Peru, Indonesia, Georgia, Greece are some countries that beat us hollow.
Ok.. what is this Math Olympiad.. who the f#$% cares about it. Right? Right! Nobody in India cares about it because realistically our students wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning anything here! And why?...
...why because instead helping kids digest concepts at an early age and inspiring them to fall in love with the subject, we make them memorize answers in a foreign language and vomit it in exams. OH... AND HEAVENS WILL FALL if that vomit is not in #English!!! #shame
OK. Screw Nobel Prizes and Math Olympiads. Nobody cares about them. It's all just for show. Let's talk of something real... meat-and-potatoes.. that matters to the economy, like invention and PATENTS... #NEP2020
Sordid story continues. These are the TOP 20 countries by GDP - Slovenia and New Zealand beat us hollow.
Top 20 countries for patents per million population - nope... more walk of #shame... "Islamic Republic of" IRAN beat us... 😭😭
Top countries for patents by organization/company - NOT A SINGLE Indian corporation in sight (not that I was expecting it!). #SHAME
