1/ Should we call it “Airborne” or “Aerosol” transmission?

Term “airborne” appears to be quite divisive. I’ve reached out to scientists on both sides of debate, asked for reasons why they think we should do one or the other. Many thoughtful responses, this thread summarizes it
2/ To be clear, till 6 months ago the closest use of "airborne" for me was for the experiments we do with @NASAAirborne & @NCAR_Science chasing eg wildfire smoke from an aircraft (some cool videos at photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOJ…)
3/ In the past I've used “airborne”as synonym of “aerosol” for SARS-CoV-2. But was told by some this was problematic, so stopped. Asked around, this summarizes it:
"Arg+" and "Arg -" mean arguments in favor and against using “airborne”
“Resp” are my responses to some arguments.

1/ Why the arguments against aerosol transmission (AT) of SARS-CoV-2 don't hold water. See my Perspective in MedScape at:

I have been trying to understand for months what has convinced some researchers that AT is not important.
2/ Recently a paper was published in JAMA summarizing a lot of the arguments: jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…

- I wrote a quick rebuttal in Twitter

I also asked JAMA Editors if they would allow a formal rebuttal, but with extra length, given how much needs...
3/ to be explained, in order for the arguments to be understandable by professionals in health care and related fields, who are often unfamiliar with many of the relevant details.

JAMA said they were not accepting any commentary due to high volume.

2/ Creative idea.
- Drops fall quickly (within 1-2m). If they dominated, shorter people should have a higher chance of contagion
- Exhaled aerosols rise in cooler surroundings, due to buoyancy of the warmer exhaled air (e.g. Chen et al. (2020) sciencedirect.com/science/articl…)
3/ We have also seen this effects in initial experiments trying to characterize the close proximity situation, by measuring CO2 at different heights in front of a person speaking. The data below, taken by Dr. @djpagonis in our group, shows the CO2 concentration while speaking...
