This is important. And a key problem why AB NDP are not attracting voter approval.

It is the economy. A robust economy enables income distribution, adequate tax base, and stability for all. Policies that address income inequity are losing priority to social issues.
It’s always the economy that enables policy changes.

We observe clearly that many citizens are perfectly content to allow others to suffer to maintain their economic dominance. Social issues are only relevant to them in a robust economy.
The economy is what most voters use to decide where to place their support. Not social issues. It’s a key failing of some people’s human nature: “me first, everyone else when I’m sated.”
Those of us who are not limited to purely self interest need to learn to speak in a language the self interested understand.

“It’s the economy, stupid!” was James Carville’s method of connecting to those who only heard economic narratives. And it worked.
The problem is, President Bill Clinton didn’t focus enough on social issues and how they are directly related to the economy.

But new ideas are changing that dynamic.

Modern economists are challenging the divide between the economy and social progress.
Mariana Mazzucato is a modern economist challenging classic Keynesian economic theory and the far right’s Austrian economic theory (mumbo jumbo BS).

Her research reveals a key flaw in economics research and assertions. It doesn’t account for the voluntary sector.
By expanding our understanding of what makes the economy function to the benefit of the citizenry, we can capture social issues within an economic framework.

Mazzucato’s ideas are revolutionary and game changing.

Guess who has incorporated some of her theories & suggestions?
The Liberal Party of Canada. They invited Mazzucato to make recommendations on economic issues in the Canadian context. The Liberal Party is exploring innovative solutions to age old problems. Both NDP and CPC are opposed and seek to undermine these efforts.
The NDP sees the economy from a socialist perspective. It views capitalism as the source of social problems. The NDP have the exact opposite opinion. The free market solves every conservative’s social problem. And if it doesn’t, oh well.
But what if capitalism isn’t the evil or saviour it’s made out to be? What if it’s a tool we can employ to benefit all?

That’s Mazzucato’s premise. That capitalism can be shaped to provide for all citizens. Not just the poor and not just the wealthy.
The economy is shaped by human decisions and economic policy.

You want to know why WE Charity is being vilified by the far left and the far right? Because they dare to combine the public and private sectors with the plural sector.
What’s the plural sector? The voluntary sector that meets the needs of the disadvantaged. Your mother’s care when you’re sick, homeless shelters that provide food and support services, food banks that provide to those in need.
That’s the plural sector that Mazzucato includes in her economic theory. It blows the ideological beliefs of socialists and far right libertarians to pieces. Because neither give any credence to the plural sector’s involvement in the economy.
So it’s easy to discern why Forbes has called Mazzucato the “most dangerous economist on earth.”

Her ideas are revolutionary. Her inclusion of unpaid labour in economic policy can change the way we see the economy.
It is the economy, stupid! And Rachel Notley @RachelNotley is smart enough to recognize that. Someone needs to give Notley a copy of Mazzucato’s book and introduce AB NDP to the plural sector and economic language to attract the self interested.

A focus on social needs is not enough. Approaching economics and economic policy like it impacts everyone (which it does) and everyone’s prosperity is dependent upon policy that benefits all (which it is) changes the conversation & piques the interest of those looking to profit.
That’s why AB NDP will not gain political support beyond those who put social needs above economic issues. That’s the flaw in socialist ideology. It’s policies are restricted to the working class. We need economic policy that incorporates public, private AND plural sectors.
It’s all labour that is part of the economy. Not just paid labour.

We all need to focus on the economy. Because the economy is our collective life blood.
That’s supposed to be CPC has the opposite opinion, but it’s getting difficult to distinguish the two parties lately.

My apologies for the mistake.
For more information about the innovative ideas of Mazzucato, check out her books, podcast interviews and Youtube video presentations.

Now the NDP/CPC alliance makes sense. LPC is changing the game.
