THE PUNISHMENT OF LUXURY

Our 3rd #timstwitterlisteningparty (thanks so much for having us again @Tim_Burgess!)

Also our 13th studio album released on September 1st 2017
The title was appropriated from a painting by Segantini which hangs in Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery. I have always loved the powerful image but the frankly misogynist theme of “bad mothers” in purgatory is not the reason for the title usage.
It’s to reflect the nature of the modern world where we have been brainwashed into believing that we must purchase things not strictly essential for our true happiness.
The album was our most successful for a long time, it was our best charting album for some 26 years.

With the benefit of hindsight, Paul and I also agree that it is one of our three very best albums
We really feel it is that good #timstwitterlisteningparty

TRACK 2 – ISOTYPE
Originally intended to be a short rather esoteric piece about the International System of Typographic Education. Basically, the reduction of words and concepts into symbols. One of the tracks using the text to speak voices that we liked when making the album.
Paul loved the idea so much that he insisted on trying a melody. The tune was so good that I knew I had to try to create a song. But what the fuck do you sing about Isotype?! I made it into an analogy that Emojis are the new hieroglyphics.

This track is a classic tale of OMD recycling.

The melody was written by Paul and myself many years earlier, but the rest of the piece never worked until I completely rewrote the rest of the backing. Only then did I think of putting the lyrics on.
