Echo & the Bunnymen released Porcupine 40 years ago today. So here's a long thread of videos and other bits and pieces celebrating this magnificent LP, starting with the immense Back of Love
Alongside the album, Echo & The Bunnymen released "Porcupine, An Atlas Adventure", a VHS tape featuring 26 minutes of videos recorded in Liverpool and Iceland in 1983. Here's In Bluer Skies (THREAD)šŸ“¼ šŸ§µ
I think Porcupine sometimes gets overshadowed by the two Bunnymen albums that came immediately before and after, but it's just as great IMHO

Happy birthday to Roddy Frame. Here's a celebratory thread of some classic clips, a few of my photos and some ephemera, starting with Aztec Camera performing We Could Send Letters on Switch in 1983
This is one of my favourite Roddy clips. Aztec Camera's great cover of Van Halen's Jump filmed in Barcelona in 1984. The full one-hour concert is at šŸ§µ
Here are some of my photos taken when Aztec Camera played Birmingham University in 1982. Honoured that some were used in the booklet and on a sleeve in this recent box set cherryred.co.uk/product/aztec-ā€¦

Welcome to SHUFFLEMANIA! brought to you by #TimsTwitterListeningParty.

THE SHUFFLE MAN:

Heā€™s a Gemini. He surfs the impossible with a wand and a top hat: an amoral superhero with a moral compass.
This song was recorded at my kitchen table. I sang this into a cheap recorder, sent the tape to Brendan Benson, and when it came back it had a band on it. So I double-tracked my vocalā€¦ #TimsTwitterListeningParty
Here's Track 2: THE INNER LIFE OF SCORPIO:

If youā€™re a Scorpio ā™ļø youā€™re supposed to have a nose for the darker things in life: detective, surgeon, erotic explorer. Actors have to be all those things & hang their personae up in the cupboard afterwards. #TimsTwitterListeningParty

1. Try - Man! This was the first song I wrote and recorded for the album, early iterations were inspired by the documentary Hoop Dreams and later on by my own feelings about where I am going and where I was mentally at the time. #timstwitterlisteningparty

Dreams donā€™t just materialise, especially for people like us or people who come from what Iā€™ve come from. And you know what thatā€™s fine, thatā€™s life. The best we can do is our best, and leave everything else #timstwitterlisteningparty
Message In a Hammer - I wrote and recorded this the day after the Lekki Toll Gate massacre - the hammer was a signifier for justice (gavel), but could also be seen as a gun

DEB
In 1990 we took a break from recording to go out and tour to promote the Glider EP. The tour started in Ireland and was kind of disastrous #timstwitterlisteningparty
The first gig I seem to remember was at some student union place where they had no idea we were supposed to be there! #timstwitterlisteningparty
The second place was booked in a pub, where the stage was so small we could barely fit the drum kit let alone the rest of our gear, so we couldnā€™t play there either #timstwitterlisteningparty

About 18 months ago, I mentioned to Chris that some members of @BTS_twt had said they were into our band, and Iā€™d heard a rumour they might like to collaborate. 4 months later he called me super-excited - ā€˜Iā€™ve got the song for BTS!ā€™ - and played the demo over the phone. Phil
It was one of those brilliant moments Iā€™ll always remember. The band fleshed it out together and then Chris went to Seoul for 48 hours (most of the time in a quarantine hotel). RM did an amazing job with the Korean lyrics, and SUGA and j-hope totally nailed the breakdown. Phil
All 7 of their voices blend so well together, and with Chrisā€™. This is me and my three boysā€™ favourite song. šŸ’œ Phil #TimsTwitterListeningParty #MusicOfTheSpheres

1. DER SUMPF (SINFONIE DER GROƟSTADT)
This translates as ā€˜The Swamp (Symphony of a Great City)ā€™. Berlin is built on very sandy soil which was originally marshland / swamp - named by the Slavic peoples who first settled it (brl = swamp in Slavic) #timstwitterlisteningparty
As for ā€˜Symphony of a Great Cityā€™, that comes from Walter Ruttmannā€™s film of the same name from 1927. The theme which emerges in this song, on piano, is inspired by music from Edmund Meiselā€™s original score for that film & repeats across the record #timstwitterlisteningparty
This was intended to be a very murky, bubbly, primeval-sounding intro, then the city starts to emerge from the swamp and we start hearing industrial & electronic sounds (the industrial sounds taken from Ruttmannā€™s pioneering ā€˜Wochenendeā€™ audio collage) #timstwitterlisteningparty

Welcome to Tim's Twitter Listening Party for our 2018 album Time 'n' Place. #timstwitterlisteningparty
We begin Time 'n' Place with cable noise and a count-in to "Outside". We wanted to make a statement with this opener; this is punk-ish guitar thrash instead of our familiar digital pop rap style. That's Sarah on vocals, Jamie on bass and Gus on drums. #timstwitterlisteningparty
James Rowland (@Flat_Earth_Mom) - who plays on every T'n'P track bar one - is on guitar, and Jennifer Walton (@jnnfrwltn) provides synth noise on this song. James and Jenny joined us on the tours for T'n'P, playing guitar and drums/synths respectively. #timstwitterlisteningparty

INFORM - EDUCATE - ENTERTAIN

The last track to be written for this album, with good reason as it contains elements of all the others. Iā€™ve used that same trick a few times.. I like to think itā€™s clever & symphonic but itā€™s probably just lazy #timstwitterlisteningparty
We used to start the show with this song and Iā€™d tune in to a radio live - it normally went fine apart from the night at @thetradesclub Hebden Bridge where I managed to tune in to a BBC R4 discussion on anal sex (I kid you not) #timstwitterlisteningparty
This quote is Marie Slocombe, the founder of the BBC Archive. A few reviews seemed to think it was Margaret Thatcher, which I think is the angriest Iā€™ve been about any review before or since. It is not Margaret Thatcher. #timstwitterlisteningparty

Dear Friends, since much of the world is in lockdown, or trying to make do in these difficult times, I decided to borrow @Tim_Burgess lovely idea and do a sort of #TimsTwitterListeningParty type thing for my @sohoradio show tomorrow 4-6pm - iā€™ll let two hours of my new songs play
And iā€™ll also answer any questions live about the tracks or the process, and just chat as time permits - we can call it a BJM Listening party or just Sunday afternoon feeling breezy - tune in and I see you soon
Wow. this show will be biblical... I would be very appreciative if people spread the word for this specific episode of #WeAreTheRadio on @sohoradio #London sohoradiolondon.com/player/music I study the history of music, and I know for a fact that no band or artist in history has done this.

SHE WORKS OUT TOO MUCH:
She Works Out Too Much
A. At one point I was wanting to call the song ā€œImitation Loveā€ #TimsTwitterListeningParty
B. The instrumental intro sections have a sample of famous producer Rob Schnapfā€™s dog Poppy barking on the beat. I mean, Poppy wasnā€™t barking on the beat, that was done in post. #TimsTwitterListeningParty
A. Arielā€™s descending synth bass line on the chorus is very scary #TimsTwitterListeningParty

THE PUNISHMENT OF LUXURY

Our 3rd #timstwitterlisteningparty (thanks so much for having us again @Tim_Burgess!)

Also our 13th studio album released on September 1st 2017
The title was appropriated from a painting by Segantini which hangs in Liverpoolā€™s Walker Art Gallery. I have always loved the powerful image but the frankly misogynist theme of ā€œbad mothersā€ in purgatory is not the reason for the title usage.
Itā€™s to reflect the nature of the modern world where we have been brainwashed into believing that we must purchase things not strictly essential for our true happiness.

Those organ sounds...
#TimsTwitterListeningParty
1. L Y F - Love You Forever. Voice acquired taste (I like it raw like that). Great bassline and rhythm....and organ #TimsTwitterListeningParty
2. Cave Song - reminds me how many rhythm changes they had. I never could understand what Ellery sang but it didnā€™t matter. Under the sound...the melody... #TimsTwitterListeningParty

I find it hard to sit still and focus so during the day, when Iā€™m not drinking with the alcoholic couple upstairs or lying on the big bed in the back room bathed in the shifting sunlit patterns from the trees outside.. #TimsTwitterListeningParty
I wander the streets for hours upon miles upon hours upon miles.
After working in crappy jobs for years, itā€™s a steady joy. I have no money of course but I donā€™t mind, I am free.

Colour By Numbers is one of the albums that made me.

Never gets the credit that other more allegedly credible bands and albums get, but it's a total masterpiece.

Now listening to "Black Money". Still stunning after 37 years.

Oh my god, "That's The Way (I'm Only Trying To Help You)". New Pop Gospel. Almost too good for us. We didn't deserve it. #timstwitterlisteningparty
Most of the bands I was into in the early 80s had a crack at ripping off Motown. (Faux-town.) I don't know if anyone did it better than @BoyGeorge @RealCultureClub @mrstevelevine on "Church Of The Poison Mind". #TimsTwitterListeningParty
