"On Friday the Emergency Committee on #COVID19 met & reviewed the current pandemic.
It was a sobering moment coming 6 months on from when the Committee advised, & I agreed, that the outbreak constituted a Public Health Emergency of Intl Concern"-@DrTedros
"At the time, 30 January, there were fewer than 100 cases and no deaths outside of China.
When the Committee met three months ago, 3 million cases of #COVID19 had been reported to WHO, and more than 200,000 deaths"-@DrTedros
"Since then, the number of #COVID19 cases has increased more than fivefold to 17.5 million, and the number of deaths has more than tripled, to 680,000"-@DrTedros
"In addition to the direct toll #COVID19 is having, the Committee noted the health impact that disrupted services are having on a range of other diseases"-@DrTedros
"That compounds what we already know about reduced immunisation coverage, cancer screening & care, mental health services."-@DrTedros
"A survey of responses from 103 countries between mid May & early July found that 67% of countries report disruption in family planning and contraception services"-@DrTedros
"More than half of countries reported disruption in antenatal care services and more than a third of countries reported disruption in child birth services.
On top of the health impact, we have seen the damage #COVID19 has caused socially, economically and politically"-@DrTedros
"The Committee put forward a number of recommendations for countries to continue to implement to bring the virus under control"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"These range from sharing best practice, to enhancing political commitment and leadership for national strategies and localized response activities driven by science, data, and experience"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"We know from serology studies - most people remain susceptible to #COVID19, even in areas that have experienced severe outbreaks.
Over the past week we’ve seen several countries that appeared as though they were past the worst now contending with fresh spikes in cases"-@DrTedros
"We’ve also seen how some countries, regions or localities that had a high number of cases are now bringing the outbreak under control"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"It’s not easy, of course. Strict measures may cause their own problems for delivery of essential health services, the economy & societies overall"-@DrTedros
"The Committee acknowledged that Member States have tough choices to make to turn the #COVID19 epidemic around.
But they were also clear that when leaders step up and work intensely with their populations, this disease can be brought under control"-@DrTedros
"We learn every day about this virus and I’m pleased that the world has made progress in identifying treatments that can help people with the most serious forms of #COVID19 recover"-@DrTedros
"The Committee recommended that countries engage in the Access to #COVID19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, participate in relevant clinical trials, and prepare for safe and effective therapeutics and vaccine introduction"-@DrTedros
"A number of vaccines are now in phase three clinical trials and we all hope to have a number of effective vaccines that can help prevent people from infection.
However, there’s no silver bullet at the moment and there might never be"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"For now, stopping #COVID19 outbreaks comes down to the basics of public health and disease control.
Testing, isolating and treating patients, and tracing and quarantining their contacts.
Inform, empower and listen to communities. Do it all"-@DrTedros
"For individuals, it’s about keeping physical distance, wearing a mask, cleaning hands regularly and coughing safely away from others. Do it all"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"The message to people & governments is clear: do it all.
"We’ve seen around the world, that it’s never too late to turn this #COVID19 pandemic around.
If we act together today, we can save lives, we can save livelihoods if we do it all together"-@DrTedros
"This week, we’re also launching a mask challenge with partners from around the world and we’re encouraging people to send in photos of themselves wearing a mask.
As well as being one of the key tools to stop #COVID19, the mask has come to represent solidarity"-@DrTedros
"Like the #SafeHands and #HealthyAtHome challenges, we’re going to be spreading further positive messages about how everyone has a role to play in breaking chains of transmission"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"If you’re a health worker, a frontline worker, wherever you are, show us your solidarity in following national guidelines & safely wearing a mask – whether caring for patients or loved ones, riding on public transport to work, or picking up essential supplies"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"As well as hand sanitizer, I carry a mask with me all the time and use it when I’m in places where there are crowds.
By wearing a mask, you’re sending a powerful message to those around you that we’re all in this together"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"Wear a mask when appropriate
Keep your physical distance from others and avoid crowded places
Observe coughing etiquette
Clean your hands frequently
"One of the areas that we’ve been continuing to study is the origins of the virus that causes #COVID19.
The WHO advance team that travelled to #China has now concluded their mission to lay the groundwork for further joint efforts to identify the virus origins"-@DrTedros
"As a result of these efforts, WHO & Chinese experts have drafted the Terms of Reference for the studies & programme of work for an intl. team, led by WHO.
The international team will include leading scientists & researchers from #China & around the 🌍"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"Epidemiological studies will begin in Wuhan, #China to identify the potential source of infection of the early #COVID19 cases.
Evidence and hypotheses generated through this work will lay the ground for further, longer-term studies"-@DrTedros
"Finally, this week is #breastfeeding awareness week. As we’ve seen again and again, standard public health measures are often the most effective.
We are reiterating the importance of breastfeeding, which has lifesaving benefits for babies and families"-@DrTedros
"At the time of #COVID19, especially when there is disruption to health services; WHO recommends that mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be encouraged, the same as all other mothers, to initiate or continue to breastfeed"-@DrTedros
"Mothers should be counselled that the many, many benefits of #breastfeeding for newborn babies and children substantially outweigh the potential risks for #COVID19 infection"-@DrTedros
"🤱& 👶 should be helped to:
-remain together while rooming-in throughout the day & night
-practise skin-to-skin contact, incl. kangaroo mothercare, esp. immediately after birth & during establishment of #breastfeeding
whether 🤱 or 👶 have suspected/confirmed #COVID19"-@DrTedros
LIVE: Media briefing with @DrTedros on outcome of the #mpox Emergency Committee meeting x.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"#Mpox has been reported in #DRC for more than a decade, and the number of cases reported each year has increased steadily over that period.
Last year, reported cases increased significantly, and already the number of cases reported so far this year has exceeded last year’s total, with more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths.
As many of you who tune into our regular press conferences know, WHO has been working on the mpox outbreak in Africa and raising the alarm that this is something that should concern us all"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "Last week I announced that I was convening an Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations to evaluate the upsurge of #mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries in Africa"-@DrTedros
Media briefing on pandemic, preparedness and response and other developments at the #WHA77 with @DrTedros x.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"Today, the nations of the world made history at the World Health Assembly.
After two years of negotiations, they adopted a strong package of amendments to the International Health Regulations, based on the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The IHR was last updated 19 years ago. The amendments adopted today strengthen global preparedness, surveillance and response to public health emergencies, including pandemics"-@DrTedros #WHA77
"And although the #PandemicAccord has not yet been finalized, the Health Assembly has charted the way forward.
It has agreed to extend the mandate of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body, to finalize negotiations on the Pandemic Agreement as soon as possible, and by next year’s World Health Assembly at the latest"-@DrTedros #WHA77
In an historic development, the #WHA77 today agreed a package of critical amendments to the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR), and made concrete commitments to completing negotiations on a global pandemic agreement within a year.

LIVE: @DrTedros' briefing on the health situation in #Gaza to the @UN Security Council twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"Let me be clear from the outset that I fully understand the anger, grief and fear of the Israeli people following the horrific, barbaric and unjustifiable attacks by Hamas and other armed groups on Israeli civilians on the 7th of October.
The killing of 1,400 people, and injuries to more than 7,200 others, is bad enough. For the survivors and families of victims, the mental health consequences will endure for a long time to come.
WHO is gravely concerned for the health and well-being of Israeli hostages in Gaza, many of whom are older people, children and those with urgent medical needs"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros @UN "Two weeks ago, I spoke with families of hostages, and I will meet them in Geneva next week. I feel their heartache and fear"-@DrTedros
Media briefing on the health situation in Gaza and Israel, and other global health issues with @DrTedros twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"We are running out of words to describe the horror unfolding in Gaza.
Since Hamas’s horrific attacks on Israel on the 7th of October, more than 10,000 people have been killed, including over 8,500 in Gaza and 1400 in Israel. In both Israel and Gaza, 70% of those killed are women and children"-@DrTedros
"More than 21,000 are injured and more than 1.4 million people in Gaza have been displaced.
The situation on the ground, in Gaza, is indescribable.
Hospitals crammed with the injured, lying in corridors;
Morgues overflowing;
Doctors performing surgery without anaesthesia;
Thousands of people seeking shelter from the bombardment;
Families crammed into overcrowded schools, desperate for food and water;
Toilets overflowing and the risk of disease outbreaks spreading;
And everywhere, fear, death, destruction, loss"-@DrTedros

Derived from wild Mexican yam, norethindrone is one of the first active ingredients in birth control pills.
When Dr Luis Miramontes stabilised the synthetic hormone, norethindrone, he was unaware of his major contribution to women’s health and history.
