I wrote a NEWSWEEK article on how Trump could delegitimize the election to cause chaos—amidst which chaos state/federal prosecutions of him may become impossible. With today's breaking news on another possible Trump prosecution, this may be worth a reread. newsweek.com/trump-election…
The short version: If, in October, Trump believes he's about to lose, his thoughts will turn to avoiding all prosecutions post-presidency. His only option will be to so torch the legitimacy of a Biden win that *anyone* prosecuting him post-presidency is no longer a viable option.
The only way for all post-presidency prosecutions of Trump to suddenly become too dangerous for any entity—state or federal—to pursue would be if Biden's win is (artificially) made *so* "controversial" by Trump's words and actions that any prosecution of Trump risks civil unrest.
Trump can't resign and have Pence pardon him—a scenario I never considered likely anyway—for *state* offenses.

So if Trump wants to be free of prosecution post-presidency, he must find a way to make it too politically (even literally) "dangerous" for any entity to prosecute him.
Trump may or may not be able to save himself from a loss in November. But he can, with just a few tweets, create such chaos surrounding a Biden victory that 30%-40% of the country considers Biden "not the president"—and therefore any prosecution of Trump a cause for civil unrest.
A last thought on this: I appreciate the sentiment, but I am *not* smarter than the entirety of Trump's dozens-strong core of White House and external advisers. Please don't give me credit for an "idea" no one in Trumpworld has already thought of—I promise you, they already have.
